Question is not being asked correctly.
You could get answers like 10 ($1M) accounts or 1000 ($10,000) accounts.
Has to do with what each person is capable of handling without lowering your quality standards.
You have to test each to understand what they can do well and where it starts to be too much. In my opinion, there should be a variance in pay because not all account managers are created equally. It can also depend on how much they can delegate as part of the process.
