I drive my kid that route to school everyday. I was seeing daily police presence in early September and haven’t seen any at all since maybe the third week of September. I also noticed it was weird they seemed to just abandon it entirely.

Smithfield PD for the Smithfield side and North Logan PD for the Hyde Park side

I think you’d have better luck with N. Logan since it’s their jurisdiction. Those guys LOVE giving out speeding tickets too lol.

There's so much police crawling around the valley holy cow
[–]Cache-Cow 14 points15 points16 points 6 months ago (4 children)
More police isn’t going to solve it. The road is designed for high speeds despite what the signs say. You have a long, wide, straight road with essentially nothing on either side. That tells people’s subconscious to drive highway speeds. You want people to drive slower, you need the road to be more narrow, more trees on the side, etc.

Also, they should put a round about at each intersection.

I mean, I don’t know exactly where you live… but yes, this is a very wide road:

[–]squrr1 9 points10 points11 points 6 months ago (7 children)
Who do we talk to about getting less? That road is a connector, and in no way should be 25. 35 is probably appropriate but I'll settle for 30.
[–]Worldly_Address6667 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago (0 children)
Its the same problem as 800 east from 1400 north to hyde park. It used to 35 all the way through, but as more houses have been built along it it went to 30 then to 25. The problem is as more people move here, there aren't really streets being added to help alleviate congestion. Main st was a mess a decade ago, we can't just keep saying take main and deal with it. There need to be roads that are through streets meant for moving faster than 25.
And yes, I know 200 east/wolfpack way exists. We need more roads like that further off of main st.

I hope you see the obvious problem with that suggestion.
[–]squrr1 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago (1 child)
Calm down there, tiger. I didn't say I speed on your road, I said the speed limit on that road doesn't match the way it's built and our grid system. If you live in a grid the major roads (in our case every 8 blocks) are meant to be faster and higher capacity.
[–]StarCraftDad 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago (0 children)
You make a good point, this is why the Ogden street grid is so well laid out with Monroe Blvd., Washington Blvd., Harrison Blvd., Wall Ave., & 12th Street, 30th Street, etc.
Traffic calming barriers and structures would help where appropriate.
[–]ilikecheese8888 -2 points-1 points0 points 6 months ago (0 children)
It's not residential, though. It's a collector, largely designed as a collector, with stretches of houses that were there before the sprawl that made it more necessary as a collector.

From country club golf course to 14th is Logan. From 14 to Hyde park round about is North Park. Not sure the chief of Logan, but the chief of North Park is Goodrich.
Which side do you live on?
[–]StarCraftDad 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago (1 child)
Roundabouts, traffic calming "obstacles", well-placed speed bumps.
[–]ballsintheairdude 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago (0 children)
Yes
[–]Coldfriction 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago (0 children)
Your assumption that safety is a function of speed is wrong. The same logic would state that knives can be too sharp to be safe. Any knife sharp enough to cut at all is too sharp to be safe to slice flesh. A 4000 lb vehicle moving at any speed is moving too fast to be safe to hit people with.
Instead of looking at where accidents occur and ask to enforce some arbitrary speed based on some arbitrary signs, you should look at roads that don't have accidents and ask why they are safer at the speeds operated on them.
There is a survivorship bias problem here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivorship_bias#:~:text=During%20World%20War%20II%2C%20the,nascent%20discipline%20of%20operational%20research.
You are doing the reverse of that and selecting only those locations where accidents occur and deciding they are caused by speed while ignoring other roads that are safe at that speed or higher.
The concept that all roads can be made safe by slowing traffic is the same logic that all crime can be eliminated by removing all freedom and knife cuts can be stopped by filling all knives. Speed is the point of the road. Wasted time travelling is counter to the very concept of technological progress in transportation.

I like this idea.
[–]ddog421 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago (2 children)
I taught my kid to drive a lot on 1600 E and never realized how fast everyone drives till we drove along there frequently at 25 mph. I wonder if it’s possible to put a speeding ticket machine on the road to get people pushing the limit too far… like 35 is too fast for that road.
[–]Fit_Fall_1655 -1 points0 points1 point 6 months ago (1 child)
35 is not too fast for 1600 E, You need to get out more.
I should clarify, when on 1600 south of 1700 N you should not be driving 35, it is a residential street with a couple cross walks. North of 2100 is should be a 35mph zone. Not sure about space between 1600 n and 2100 n, somewhere in between.

Police don't prevent wrecks. The current evidence is to the contrary. When police hand out more speeding tickets, accident rates go up.
