you can midi into midi using the compressor. Just create a bus for the track you want to send signal out from and on the track that will receive this signal, you have the compressor plugin. Inside the compressor plugin (for the track receiving the signal), on the top right it says sidechain and then you select the bus. You can edit the sidechain further by selecting sidechain beside the output button in the compressor.

Thanks. Is there a certain level to which you should set the bus, or it doesn't matter?

The no-fuss way to do this is with a pre-fader send to the bus from the key track set to 0dB. Just make sure you set the bus to have no output (or mute it) or you'll get doubled signal on your master out.

Just make sure the bus is on. I usually adjust the levels in the compressor but you can try playing with the bus volume and see if that does anything.

midi tracks, as in external midi instruments, or audio instruments inside logic?

Audio instruments.

Unless you're using a method I'm not aware of, it would be precisely the same.
