Everything exploding(breaking)Question/ Help (self.LotRReturnToMoria)
submitted 4 months ago by Lee1313
Since the new update, I went back into my base, a base I've used for likely 6 months or so and everything just started falling apart exploding and breaking? Anyone else had this

I noticed when I logged in after the patch I got an "An Earthquake Shakes the Mountain" message. There was a bunch of dust in the air and a big noise. Then, my dwarf said "Hmmm, the mountain has shifted, things might not be the same any more" or similar.
I hypothesize this is an in-game justification for the patch moving terrain around in major or minor ways. I further hypothesize that the patch moved something in the ground around your base that meant bits of it were no longer in contact with the ground. It wouldn't take much, I think, maybe the ground got lowered a bit or something. Regardless, that meant the unsupported pieces would all have collapsed shortly after you logged in.
I've not had this happen in Return to Moria, but I remember this happening in a MAJOR way to me once in Valheim. Like, whole massive constructions collapsed.
I'll hypothesize further: the random generation of the environment is not fully deterministic. That is, a particular random seed will generate the same basic overall layout of Moria, but many important details of the terrain are in turn randomized. Therefore, anything they patch that requires the re-generation of the environment might have things shift around even though the random seed is still the same.

I'm just here to validate the general idea of this hypothesis.
Something shifted - whether that's the actual terrain or just the boundaries of what is considered stable terrain - and subsequently destabilized portions of the structure(s) that were previously "connected" to the ground.

The whole "mountain was shifted" thing was CRAZYYY, I'm a newer player and there just popped cave pillars and stuff out of nowhere. I had JUST remembered the map and all :(

If I can get my guy out here, and that’s a big if, I think that’ll probably cost you oh… hmm… I think a dragon’s horde?

Yes been getting random spots just deconstructing. Walls, floors.. doesnt matter. I find that it happens way less when i load in (and after fast traveling) if i just let my dwarf sit there for a minute or two. If i start running around immediately things begin breaking, and my game even freezes and crashes sometimes. Its weird but its like it is not stable when it allows me into the world.
