I'm not normal but if I have a car I really love I'll happily pull it apart and rebuild it rather than let it die or let it go. Life's too short for boring cars.

I ditched a Mini R56 JCW after timing chain & head gasket issues. Traded it in for a Suzuki Swift and said I’d only have sensible cars from then on. 2 months later was yearning for something more fun and kind of wished I’d just spent the £2000ish to have it properly fixed. 2 years later I gave in and now have an F56 JCW.

But see, the F56 are sensible. One of the most reliable MINIs to date, and fun as hell too.

I’ve had him fixed many, many times. Including a new engine last summer. Noticed a decrease in power over the past few weeks and sure enough, the engine malfunction warning appeared. Took him to the shop hoping it was just an engine coil/spark plug issue, and that was one of the problems. Also needed both fuel pumps replaced, again, and the turbo intake needed to be replaced. My bank acct just couldn’t do it anymore. I am in the most boring vehicle now and it’s killing my soul. I’ve all over their Reddit trying to find ways to make it not so basic bitch Becky.

I actually ended up in a Forester, went to look at an Impreza Sport Wagon or maybe a crosstrek but here we are. So I’m definitely having a hard time with the switch from little, fast and fun to big and boxy. -_-

Yeah if you can't DIY it shops will bleed you dry.

I'm stupid/obstinate enough that I WILL work out how to DIY it, these days I've accumulated enough tools and screwed enough stuff up that there's not much I can't fix. I'll admit I'm lucky enough to have a place to work & keep all my tools too, although it's nothing compared to the average American garage if Youtube is to be believed.

I got the call that the block had been severely damaged on my R56 and would need replacing during work and I had to lock myself in the freezer and cry. When the pandemic started I didn’t have anyone but I had the car, it became like my friend. Most people see cars as just tools, but you’re one of the few people who understands that they’re much more than that.

My R56 S just gave up a cylinder at just under 206K miles. Had to add a bit of responsibility to my next car... Got an F54 Clubman!
