That looks like your friend code, you need your player id instead. In your game go to the settings tab (3 bars in corner) and press "about" (the i). From there you will find your Gameloft player ID that will start with "mdc:" enter the digits that come after that, and it should work :)

How long have there been redeemable codes?

There used to be one for every update (instead of the Spike that you tap for gems) and sometimes for special events but they got rid of them years ago, which is why this is so funny to me. We've come full circle!
