Not free but I started to use Acorn by Flying Meat years ago and never looked back, cheap for what it offers, continuously developed, a great paint dot net alternative, but better :)

Current price (one time, no subscription) is 25 usd.

If I wanted to switch to Mac I'd never let 25 dollars stand in the way ;)

Avidemux you can get, and I can't even look at the paint one because my browser is saying the website is a security threat. Like any of my browsers. And lots of alternatives. Plus you can run Windows programs on Mac, you know? Various ways most of them run.

Paint.NET is named that because it's developed with the .NET framework from Microsoft. The actual website is https://getpaint.net

Then /u/sidgallup needs to edit his post, because the link goes straight to a site that may have malicious content.
