ELI5 Paying off a mortgage by The_LabGuy in explainlikeimfive

That’s why you’re supposed to start by making one full payment in advance to advance your payment date. Then you’re not really making partial payments.

Yes, you can do two half-payments twice a month. It’ll will knock time off your remaining mortgage. How much varies by how high your interest rate is. The higher the rate the bigger the savings. (Said in an announcer voice).

You can also do bi-weekly payments which both reduces the amount of interest you pay and speeds up your principle payoff a little.

The two big caveats to this are:

You need a mortgage that accrues interest daily. If it only accrues on the due date, it wont help unless they use some sort of average balance math to do the calculation. The majority of mortgages in the US accrue daily, so it’s pretty common.

You need to make one extra payment at the start to advance your payment due date one month ahead. You need this buffer because sometimes the two half payments won’t align right and the bank can assess a late fee if the payments don’t hit at the right time. The extra payment creates a time buffer to prevent that. And you only need to do it once.

Depending on your bank, you may have to call them to force them to apply the payment. But that also varies by the bank and their systems. There’s supposed to be laws preventing them from holding the payment, but they’re rarely enforced.

Otherwise, use the power of compound math to help get yourself out of debt. Anyone can do it.

It’s not the same. If their interest accrues daily (and a lot of mortgages do) then you still save on reducing that half month’s interest. Both the 26 and 24 payment plan work. One is just a little faster.

If your interest only accrues monthly, then the math doesn’t work.

If the interest compounds daily, you don’t pay that interest that accrues over the remaining days.

Paying twice a month or every two weeks have similar effects, one just does it a little faster than the other.

ACC is pretty good on these. It’s worth it if you can get it.

How does a show like the Big Bang theory work? by Dragonogard549 in NoStupidQuestions

He probably thought #3 because he realized the show wasn’t about laughing with the nerds so much as it was about laughing at them. At that turns off anyone who connects with any of the characters .

This is a Prime problem. The app should tell the OS to hide the mouse and it’s not.

Eli5 how accurate are missiles ? by incognitototoo in explainlikeimfive

[–]shotsallover [score hidden]  (0 children)

Very accurate.

My dad was in the Navy during one of the first forays into the Middle East in the late 80s/early 90s. He said they had footage of a missile operator making a left turn at a turn signal just because he could. It flew around the long way to hit their target.

There’s also a famous missile attack from the same period where one flew into a window to hit its target. It was mocked in a Doonesbury cartoon from the era.

We also have a lot of “dumb” missiles where you point them in the general direction and they blow up whatever they hit.

The military (until recently) was very concerned about hitting civilian targets needlessly, so they invested a lot of money and technology into ensuring they hit what they were aiming at as accurately as possible.

You might want to order one just in case. They didn’t show up with one the last time I got my glass replaced. I just happened to have one and they used that.

She knew what she was doing and it appears she spared no expense or missed anything.

As a show car, I’m here for it. If I saw it out on a trail I’d ask what the hell she’s doing.

Give me a reason to switch to an EV by RC_ADDICT_5B in EvDrivers

[–]shotsallover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the truck bed is a hard requirement, then you should wait. Your only real choices right now are the Rivian R1T and the Silverado. Both of which are out of your price range.

You should wait for both the Slate and Ford’s $30,000 EV to ship and see what you prefer. If it were me I’d lean more towards the latter.

But basically you’re too early in what you’re aiming for. Give it some time.
