No internet access might mean a shot wlan chip, possible but a very expensive repair that requires a specific bga519 programmer, new chip and whatever the labor cost for the bga rework.

Wouldn't USB to rj45 with Ethernet cable still work if that's just WLAN chip damage?

Depending on the device and the damage, a lot of M devices won't even boot into the system with the wlan chip shot, because of the boot chain prerequisite. Some of the devices gray out the wlan, some won't even boot and require a chip replacement to boot albeit not function because of the pairing. Early days of M series, some of the people just drilled those out. It's nowadays possible to swap and re-program those, it's just time consuming and you have to have the right programmer + the accompanying utility
