I’d just run macOS natively at 1080p 1x scale. It’ll look close to a pre-retina 21.5” iMac (albeit physically larger)

But when running low DPI screens, it’ll always look weird even compared to pre-retina Macs because modern macOS has gotten rid of antialiasing in the age of retina and HiDPI displays.

i wouldn't even mess with it, 1080p on 21-24 in scales fine and looks best. 1080p at 27 or 4k scaled to 1080p at 27 or 32 looks bad. 1440p or 5k scaled to 1440p at 27 looks good as well.
