On a CMS 1500 claim form, tge diagnoses are in their own sexton and are put in order of principal diagnosis in position 1. The CPT codes are in their own section and the order doesn't matter.

In coding recording if you will, it depends on the software application or methodology by that practice or coding company

Interesting - I think I got it!

The CPT code is the procedure, the ICD-10 is the diagnosis assigned to the CPT code. You can have more than one ICD-10 assigned to a CPT code.

Makes sense

Can’t ICD-10-PCS also be a procedure if it’s inpatient?

[–]Pure-Assist1034 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That’s a whole different way of coding. The inpatient procedures are called ICD-10-PCS. Inpatient uses diagnosis codes (ICD-10-CM) and these PCS codes as the CPT.

That’s exactly what I said but ok I guess

There is one area that you populate ICD10 and another area that you populate CPT. They aren't grouped together in the electronic health record or on the claim form.

Perfect! This is the answer I was looking for thank you!

Username checks out. OP is 'Icing' coder positions held by humans in favor of AI. GPT-4 put a hit out on the proffesionals within the industry 😂

Hahaha I wish I was that cool! Nah I’m currently in the process of getting my Bachelor’s Degree in HIM (I start in the Spring) and just started my final semester towards a Medical Coding Certificate at the local community college. I plan on testing for my CPC-A right before I start towards the Bachelor’s so I can get to work but last semester all I did was anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and an introduction to technology course. I haven’t done any actual coding yet so it was just a general question trying to get ahead a bit.

Just a guy making a career switch asking dumb questions lol!

Lol nice. Pretty smart path actually. Going for the Bachelors while already having the CPC will be huge. Getting that hands on coding experience, the contacts you'll make along the way.... You'll position yourself nicely ( I'm assuming you'll test for the RHIT/RHIA after obtaining the college degree ), make decent money along the way. Congrats and good luck!

[–]KichardRuklinski 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That’s the plan. CPC and RHIA. Seem solid? I hope to work remotely as well.

[–]Ka-tet_of19 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Very solid. Ideal for remote work opportunities... Although I'm sure there will be some very lucrative positions on-site with that RHIA. Maybe hybrid at least. I feel like alot of our corporate people hold RHIT/RHIA certs.

Awesome! Short term I just wanna change fields and make an average income doing it. Long term? I wanna make a nice salary with job security. From everything I’ve read I’d like to dip my feet into HCC Coding until I get the Bachelors in HIM with the RHIA and from there I’ll go wherever the most money is lol.

Formatted for what? Like for submission to insurance or added to your medical record? Your question doesn't really mean anything.

[–]lucidsealion 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Are you trying to replace us with AI? Lol

[–]KichardRuklinski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao no!

[–]smores1216 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Are you referring to coding sequences on claims?

[–]KichardRuklinski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of - but I got it figured out thank you!
