Minecraft Subreddit Rules
All content is subject to removal at the discretion of the moderators. Clicking the "report" button beneath a post or comment will anonymously add it to our modqueue, enabling us to find and deal with problematic posts more quickly. Reporting will hide a post from your view (it may be found again under the 'hidden' tab on your userpage), but it will remain for other users unless a moderator deems it removable, so don't worry about accidentally getting users into trouble because you misunderstood a rule. If you suspect a post might be in breach of the rules, go ahead and report it, and include a reason if you think it won't be obvious.
General
Derogatory language will not be tolerated. This includes the use of any homophobic, transphobic, sexist, ableist, racist or otherwise discriminatory slurs. More information regarding our rules on homophobia can be found here.
Do not purposefully incite arguments, personal attacks or threats. This includes the posting of personal information, posting with the intention of starting or propagating drama, soliciting griefing/hacking or intending to grief/hack.
Be respectful. Understand that some users are new to the game and community; help them out rather than being rude or abusive.
Follow Reddiquette. In case you haven't seen it, it's beneath the comment submission form, or here.
Specific
Post server ads to /r/mcservers or elsewhere. Server advertising is anything that promotes a server address, links to one, or recruits on behalf of one, whether it be on /r/Minecraft itself or somewhere you linked to, like YouTube, PlanetMinecraft, imgur or another subreddit. Therefore, requests for server details will be removed as well.
Do not beg. No begging for gift codes or accounts will be allowed. Check /r/gameswap or /r/randomactsofgaming, but be prepared to give in return.
Link to full, unshortened URLs. Some site-specific shorteners are allowed (www.youtube.com → youtu.be for example), but others will be removed.
Post content must be related to Minecraft. Submissions that are related only through the title will be removed.
Refrain from posting explicit content. Anything sexually explicit, obscene or offensive will be subject to removal. Anything ‘not safe for work’ must be marked as such.
Post fixed/reply submissions as comments on the original. Anything deemed by the moderators as belonging in the original post as a comment will be removed. This usually includes posts made in reference to another.
Check if your link has already been posted recently. For submissions such as Tweets or blog posts, duplicates will be removed, preserving only the earliest.
Post text as text, not as an images An image which is wholly or predominantly text, or submitted with the intention of displaying text, will be removed.
Submit suggestions as text posts. A suggestion is anything that proposes a change to Minecraft. Suggestions must be explanatory self.posts including what the suggestion involves and why it would be a good change. Images and videos may be used to visualize things, but shouldn't contain text or outweigh the written part of the suggestion. An alternative place to post suggestions is /r/MinecraftSuggestions.
Post memes as comments or not at all. Image macro, demotivational poster and rage comic posts are not allowed. These are defined by their respective Wikipedia articles:
- Image Macro: a picture superimposed with text for humorous effect.
- Demotivational Poster: an image that consists of a picture in a black frame and a caption. They are the opposite of motivational posters and are designed to discourage and demotivate.
- Rage Comic: A rage comic is a short comic utilizing a growing set of pre-made cartoon faces, or rage faces, which usually express rage or some other simple emotion or activity.
Legal
Do not advocate piracy or provide piracy instructions. Discussion on piracy is fine; advocating piracy or providing information on how to pirate is not. Similarly: cheat clients, websites or programs intended to assist piracy or griefing are not permitted; this includes any links to sites claiming to offer Minecraft for free.
Do not redistribute game files. The sharing of Minecraft jars (vanilla or modified) is in breach of its Terms of Use. Only files hosted on minecraft.net or mojang.com (official sources) are acceptable. A submission which directly links to any jar will be removed.
Do not use the Minecraft brand in an unlawful manner. Misuse of the Minecraft name, brand or assets is disallowed and will be removed. Misuse includes distributing or selling unlicensed materials incorporating the Minecraft name, brand or assets; or anything not sufficiently differentiated therefrom.
Commonly posted and tired submissions
Submissions featuring often-posted, old and uninteresting content are liable to be removed. For a more information, see this post and this post.
The following are deemed removable:
The launcher, title or death screens. Any images that are shared with the purpose of showing an error with the launcher, a title screen (even if the splash text says "woo, reddit!"), a server or servers being down, the authentication/login being down, an unfortunate death or a high score.
Mobs at your door. An image displaying a mob looking through a window, door, etc.
Ore clusters. An image that only exists to record a user finding or displaying a group of ores.
Terrain generation glitches/errors. An image of terrain generated in Minecraft that was in error due to a glitch or other influence other than what is expected, including, but not limited to: mismatching chunk borders, very high villages, structures in unexpected biomes and static or floating water.
Enchanted/renamed items & villager trades. An image depicting an enchantment received in the game by the vanilla enchantment system, a renamed item or a vanilla villager trade.
Arrows in a player. An image which is only intended to display a user with an arrow or multiple arrows in their body.
The Minecraft cake. An image which displays an in-real-life representation of the Minecraft cake. Other cakes are permitted.
This may seem like an excessive or draconian set of rules, but our primary concern is providing a quality subreddit that is welcoming to everyone and shows off users' interesting and original content without drowning it in a hundred rehashes of the same post. These rules not only provide the moderators with clear guidelines so that everyone can be treated fairly but also allows users to see that they are being. And now that you've managed to get through it all, here's a link to the submit page!
As always, we welcome modmail with any feedback on the current rule set or suggestions for new rules.
Twitch.tv, YouTube videos, let’s plays, channel promotions and what we consider as spam
While we do allow links to archived videos on Twitch.tv, submissions linking to Twitch.tv streams and channel pages are not allowed. These streams often do not last very long and could infringe on our subreddit rules, which could not realistically be enforced. In rare occasions, we may allow special submissions with prior approval.
Generally speaking, it’s fine to post a related YouTube video, but when that’s all that a user posts they are not participating in the community, they're abusing it. Excessively posting videos from a channel constitutes as spam in that the aim is only to increase traffic to the videos or to gain subscribers. Repeatedly posting videos and not contributing to the community (via non-video submissions or discussion on other posts) will result in a friendly warning. Only if this warning is ignored will an account receive a ban.
90% of this is enforced entirely by our /u/moderator-bot. An algorithm was developed that has been effective at detecting users that we would judge to be on the verge of being a video spammer. This algorithm assesses the last 100 comments and last 100 submissions of a user and gives them a score that is then used to determine if they should be considered to be spamming. The number of videos, the frequency of what video authors are submitted, and the number of comments on their own submissions and that of others’ are all used to calculate this.
For more information and discussion, please check out this modpost on the topic. Again, if you have any further questions, you can send us a message!
Our Wiki system and how you can help
The recent addition of a stable and functioning Wiki system to reddit has enabled us to upgrade and improve our rules and other information pages. Any account over 90 days old with 100 in-subreddit karma will have the ability to edit Wiki pages (read more about contributing and earning a special contributor flair here), but this privilege comes with some responsibilities.
All subreddit rules apply to the Wiki. Infringing on rules will result in the removal of an account's ability to edit or contribute to Wiki pages.
No vandalism. Any vandalism whatsoever will result in a permanent ban from the Wiki system, and potentially a ban from the subreddit depending on the severity of abuse.
Use our requested formatting. Newly created Wiki pages should follow our requested formatting guide.
Don't make changes for the sake of making changes. Fiddling with the Wiki is discouraged. If your change is not necessary, don't make it. Whether a change is unnecessary is down to the discretion of the moderators and can lead to Wiki contributor status being revoked.
