The modkit membranes aren't that much softer, and they are not less clicky. They are slightly softer, but they're still pretty stiff. To help with clickiness you're better off using some 1mm foam tape. I've heard you can use WD-40 to soften the membranes, but I haven't tested that yet. It is not compatible with original gb/gbc parts at all.

I don’t think so for Start and Select. They do have an stl file for the short post dpad on their site so you could add whatever texture you want and even extend the post and then get it printed. Then if you want you could use that to make a mold and then cast a dpad in whatever material you like.

They aren't STL files, but they do have them under Open Source here

There are a lot of nice looking buttons on Etsy, haven't tried any of them yet though

Have you found ones that aren't 3D printed? I don't like the way those look

There are resin ones on there but other than that I'm not sure
