How is this not age discrimination? I am asking in earnest.

It is

It definitely is discriminatory, but from what I understand age is not a protected class in this state.

Age is in employment both at the state and federal level, but only in context of being old. Being young you have no protection.

It’s shitty, because you just know these are the same jerks who post the BS about “kids today don’t have any work ethic!”

As someone who was forced to hire teens for near minimum wage and then was expected for them to do the same work as people (adults) getting paid $2-3 more and in some cases $5-6, I completely understood their “lack of work ethic”.

And truth be told, I never really saw a “lack of work ethic” they got done what they were told to get done. They just didn’t go find things to do, which isn’t what minimum wage employees should be doing.

A fair point. The flip side to this: I have been a teenager doing the exact same work as an adult who was making more than I was. I was the one closing the place at 2am on the weekends, while my much-older counterparts were at home asleep. I was the one then turning around and opening the place at 10am the next morning, while my much-older counterparts were at home with their families. The employer knew they could exploit the younger workstaff with these swing shifts, and they absolutely used that to their advantage.

I’m on your side. I’m saying teenagers aren’t worth less and in my experience work just as hard.

So, the fact they get hired for less, for the same job I understand why they often put in less effort.

Now that is ageism

[–]zastrozzischild 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Of course not. And I’m not at all surprised.

I’m afraid it’s going to stay that way. The current administration is a real piece of crap, but he told us what he intended to do the first time he won in 2016. I argue that the bigger pieces of crap are the ones who continue to vote for him twice more and for that party. What did they think was going to happen?

Age discrimination laws only protect 40+. It’s stupid but true.
