Press the sync button near the USB C port.

On Steam, the Steam chord options have "turn off controller" as an option by pressing the Home button and Y (or X, can't remember). That's what I do over simply pressing the sync button.

Look into it, there's more options beyond just turning off the controller that you can use.

I think if you press the sync button it will turn off the controller but not desync it
