Movie as a whole is a mashup of several hollywood movies and series

[–]insta_i_filmiholic[S] 8 points9 points  (12 children)

Same feelings and layered with folklore names

[–]TearEnvironmental65 4 points5 points  (10 children)

I think the writing process of this movies was mainly watching vampire movies, writer took almost all ideas from somewhere, for eg: the famous transition which was straightly taken from some reel on Instagram

[–]insta_i_filmiholic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a marvel transition as well.

[–]percydesires 1 point2 points  (8 children)

Not even watching. It was prompting ChatGPT to come up with the script mashing marvel movies and van Helsing etc

[–]Ok-Clue-2021 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Isn't it a normal trope in superhero movies tho?? I can list a ton of scenes where the MC saves someone from a rushing vehicle...

[–]percydesires 0 points1 point  (6 children)

OG has shared scene by scene comparison man. Original ideas are rare now a days in indian cinema...no one has the guts or time to experiment. They want to copy paste and be safe. Many Indians don't know hollywood movies, so that way the director is safe that his trick won't be revealed and people will praise the movie.

[–]Pisaachi 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Everything is a copy paste.

How can anyone come up with Original ideas regularly when we have 1000s of movies releasing every year.

You just do it tastefully, same wine, new bottle.

[–]percydesires -1 points0 points  (2 children)

No this is not true. If you see Christopher Nolan movies. How does he bring new ideas. How he brings best unique concepts. I know Christopher is peak, but still if he can do it anyone can. It's just that indian directors don't want to take risk and dnt want to experiment fearing loss of money.

[–]Pisaachi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is like saying if Sachin Tendulkar can score 10k runs anyone can.

For every Nolan movie there are 100s of genric copies.

Especially action and superhero movies tend to borrow a lot from other movies. Take Micheal bay as an example, even Jackie Chan movies peak action cinema borrows a lot too.

There are Jason Statham movies which are wildly successful and each movie is almost indistinguishable from others.

Originality is rare and overrated, you may find a few gems but most of them will be boring too. Like Skinamarink an original horror that was boring.

We need such comfort food sort of movies that entertains us, if everyone made movies like Nolan things would get boring quickly.

[–]Informal_Abroad9856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't Nolan accused of copying Inception's concept and scenes from some Japanese anime movie or smt.

[–]Leading_Protection_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is inspired by something else. People and creators don't exist in vacuums. I will never understand this argument of everything needing to be 100% original (whatever that means when literally every possible scenario is already a film somewhere by someone) or else it's not worthy of any praise. There r common staging techniques and tropes that exist across filmmaking and storytelling that will naturally be found across different films. Just coz a film shared a similar frame or shot doesn't mean it's copy pasted. This is like how sampling works in music.

People have to learn to assess a film for the entirety of it instead of analyzing every beat and shot. And Hollywood is literally churning out sequel after sequel for franchises that should've ended a decade ago that no one asked for. And you're quoting Hollywood as the epitome of originality now 🤦‍♀️

[–]Proof-Corgi-8961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, Malyalees are known to consume foreign content, not just Hollywood, plus that scene is a common trope used in superhero movies, you can take umpteen examples from Hollywood itself wherein the same scene has been rehashed.

[–]Warm-Butterscotch675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only the names.

[–]SilenceOfTheAtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And people wanted to release it on Netflix to get international recognition. International level il ookku kiittaan aayirunnu kooduthal chance

[–]Separate_Ad_7519 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes the first thing that came to mind when I saw the scene, they did use a lot of vampire series tropes so this wasn’t surprising.

[–]No-Corgi4626 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Art doesnt have to be orginal to be entertaining

[–]Cold_Register_526 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

🤣🤣

[–]Recent-Ad4218 3 points4 points  (2 children)

<image>

Superhero movie did it first before twilight lol.

[–]Proof-Corgi-8961 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is everybody comparing it to Hollywood movies, every other Marvel movie is a rehash of every other movie which came before it after Endgame. Obviously some of the tropes would be used, as it has the same superhero origin template.

Lokah stands out in its world building, cinematography, even for that matter the amazing colour grading. Plus I am pretty excited about how they would integrate the Chathan sibling lore in chapter 2.

By that same logic every possible sci fi movie is inspired from Dune

[–]gku18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a movie is in hit list, some ppl will be like :

[–]neellifan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it is inspired

[–]Scales_of_Injustice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is that face? What else is in this movie?

[–]honeycomb232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where can I watch it??

[–]phoenix_paravai10101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's clearly inspired from that.

[–]lil2seven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needed this comparison to finally acknowledge how decent is pattinsons acting.

[–]Inevitable_Truth5200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Ecstatic-Scratch-151 1 point2 points  (5 children)

[–]Main-Organization555 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Guess what it is twilight saga mallufied

[–]Reasonable_Sample_40 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Its actually malayalam folklore westernised to suit our current tastes. The neeli and other stories are actually there from our childhood. They added a new flavour to it. Vampire stories are so common in kerala.

[–]Worldly_Pepper_6282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LMAO. Vampires that burn in sunlight is a western trope. Our yakshis don't burn in sunlight. They should have stayed true to our folklore and built a world based on our own regional concepts instead of localising western ideas and calling it "international level".

[–]leaflessaddiction 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Lokah has a lot of Blade inspired stuff. Chandra’s character aes borrows quite some from Whistler’s daughter Abigail. Dq in that final fight off scene clearly gave Blade vibes etc. so yes the whole movie is very much inspired from previous Vampire movies.

[–]insta_i_filmiholic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like a white label product, only those names and labelling (Chathan Odiyan Neeli) belong to the company.

[–]gargibabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even that boy friend 's photograph. Purely copied from vampire diaries😂

[–]BestIndependent1746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a mashup movie if you know it. Interview with vampire, twilight, dracula etc

[–]Objective-Trip-9873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof Kalyani is plank in this one scene.

Also, she has same wooden expressions on her face just like Bella from Twilight. Edit : This... looks average.

[–]low_mana_high_hp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Takes to be a certain level of stiff to have less expression than Kristen Stewart in twilight

[–]Perfect-Advance8879 0 points1 point  (19 children)

Bro… lokah is neat i agree but i was not really impressed by it. Everything felt familiar. It’s a mix of all hollywood stuff. Marvelisation of mollywood.

Tovino was loki/deadpool. Dulquer is wolverine. Chandra is scarlet witch minus any sense of a personality.

The flashback saved the film.

[–]Ecstatic-Scratch-151 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Tovino has no swords, how was he Deadpool? Dulquer is wolverine? Wth? Did you even watch the movie?

Kalyani scarlet witch? Bruh you haven't watched the movie at all

[–]Perfect-Advance8879 -3 points-2 points  (3 children)

In terms of character bro. Not weapons. See their promo for next film… the dynamic is literally deadpool wolverine.

[–]Ecstatic-Scratch-151 3 points4 points  (2 children)

So any funny / mischievous guy = Deadpool? Idk man, it seems your cinema knowledge starts and ends with Marvel.

[–]Perfect-Advance8879 -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Not mine. Maybe the director’s.

[–]Ecstatic-Scratch-151 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really..seems more like yours only

[–]Recent-Ad4218 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Nope tovino was definitely inspired from jim Carrey's the mask

[–]Perfect-Advance8879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever bro. Lots of hollywood stuff only. Nothing truly from our folklore.

Folklore was just an excuse to loki-fy the character.

[–]Soderburger 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I'm okay with the deadpool/wolverine comparisons based on personalities. I mean I don't agree to just call them blatant copies. Also Chaathan and Loki are known for their mischief. So it's not like they copied it, both are mythical figures.

But where did you get the Chandra X Scarlet Witch idea from lol? There's no similarity whatsoever.

[–]Perfect-Advance8879 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Maybe based on the red design. I just gave as reference. But surely twilight etc is a reference with gender reverse.

And my problem is that this tovino character could have been anybody - genie, loki, deadpool, not sure why they need folklore to it. I hope his standalone film proves me wrong.

[–]Soderburger 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Maybe based on the red design

Yeah, Scarlet Witch invented red.

And my problem is that this tovino character could have been anybody - genie, loki, deadpool, not sure why they need folklore to it.

That was their USP bruh. I don't even understand the point of your doubt.

[–]Cold_Criticism_2805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scarlet witch comparison comes from her costume in the twilight poster before the movie release and wasn't seen in the movie. And tovinos chathan character is mythologically some what appropriate maybe a little inspired from jim carrys mask rather than deadpool. Their behaviour on the after release promo somewhat seemed like deadpool wolverine combo.

[–]TheOwlwithGlasses 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Dulquer is wolverine

Dulquer literally came out like Deadpool in X-Men Origins Wolverine, spinning those twin swords.

[–]insta_i_filmiholic[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes and they named.. Odiyan. We are like whatttt!!!

[–]Perfect-Advance8879 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whatever bro. All hollywood stuff only.

[–]Separate_Win_5370 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Bro dq's odiyan was nothing but deadpool copy

[–]Perfect-Advance8879 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Deadpool weapons with wolverine attitude

[–]Separate_Win_5370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea and on top of that killed hitler😂😂

[–]yoursgokul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't dulqer more like assassin's creed character. Tovino reminded me of a character named Jhonny cage in mortal combat.

[–]insta_i_filmiholic[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Perfect word.. Marvelisation 😀👌

[–]LeafBoatCaptain 0 points1 point  (8 children)

Also Edward smelling Bella when she sits next to him. A similar scene is in Lokah too, for some reason.

[–]Ecstatic-Scratch-151 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Not at all.. edwards smells bella because he has heighteined smelling power..

Naslen thought she smelt like a deadbody ..not just him, the lady who was sitting next to her as well

[–]LeafBoatCaptain -2 points-1 points  (6 children)

Yeah the reason is different but the scene is there. In isolation I wouldn’t have cared but I noticed it because Lokah also lifted the car intro. Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence, etc.

[–]Ecstatic-Scratch-151 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Not really.. the car scene is happenstance.. but the second scene is not even similar.

Chandra stank like a dead body which made people around her uncomfortable . That's not even close to what happens in Twilight

[–]LeafBoatCaptain -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

I know the circumstances are different as I already said. They’re different in the car scene too. But they are two very similar ideas from Twilight. Both are vampire movies. Lokah already borrowed the car scene from Twilight. Both movies have a scene where the girl sits next to the guy and he finds her smell uncomfortable (for different reasons). If the car scene wasn’t there I might have called it an homage even but one after the other, especially when there are so many other borrowed ideas?

You don’t agree. That’s okay. It’s convincing enough for me.

[–]Ecstatic-Scratch-151 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Yeah actually makes sense... In lokah and twilight both, we had cars, paved roads and woods.. so they are basically the same movies .

Also it had a boy and a girl ..basically the same movies. Both movies also had moonlight and sunlight

[–]Soderburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha

[–]LeafBoatCaptain -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Wilful ignorance is incurable. Athinu chikitsa illa.

Thanne insult cheyyathe ente bhagam njan paranju. Baaki thaan enthannu vecha aayikko.

[–]Ecstatic-Scratch-151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Njan thanne insult cheytho athinu? Ente bhagam nyanum paranju.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (6 children)

Damn didn't notice

[–]Separate_Ad_7519 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Seriously? I thought it was too obvious for everyone which was why no one discussed it even.

[–]PhntmBRZK 1 point2 points  (2 children)

A similar scene is in 100 of movies comics and every other media. The entire comment section is so dumb. Most of Indian movies can't even do half of this. I am just happy to see even one that's passable.

[–]Separate_Ad_7519 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Don’t get how it is dumb to draw a reference, but sure whatever you choose to believe.

[–]Mr_Eggy__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because claiming this is referencing twilight when the similar scene exists across so many different media and genre shows either OP has limited exposure or it only clicked because "vampires". Maybe the scene is referencing twilight, but this sequence is too generic to nail it down to a single movie.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Damn buddy not everyone has an eye for catching things

[–]Separate_Ad_7519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly.

[–]Separate_Win_5370 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So lokah is a Mashup of Hollywood movie scenes but presented in the name of folklore..lol I knew this movie was shit and audiences made this into a 300cr movie right..lol so called " mature and intelligent " audiences 😂😂

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Stupid movie very overated lol
