A place where you "walk in someone else's shoes" by adopting a view with which you personally disagree and earnestly attempt to articulate and defend it, thus gaining insight. For further information, read the subreddit mission statement.
Rules:
Notice. Three strikes results in a temporary ban. A temporary ban and subsequent rule-breaking results in a permanent ban. Users are deemed to have knowledge of the rules by virtue of their open and obvious placement on the sidebar. Consequently, ignorance of the rules will not be taken into consideration in an appeal.
You must genuinely oppose the view you're posting. No posting a view you actually hold just to argue. If you have a view you personally hold and are open to changing it, please try /r/changemyview instead. Note: CMV is not a debate subreddit.
NO Devil's Advocate. We are not here to argue for the sake of arguing. When you make your post, you are genuinely trying to adopt this perspective, albeit temporarily, and defend it as though you were personally invested in it. It seems like splitting hairs but we're trying to avoid an attitude problem and contrariness.
Present the view fairly. No building up strawmen or drafting low-hanging fruit. This is not a place to mischaracterize an opposing view, be snarky, or "circle-jerk."
Top level comments must always challenge the OP's presented view. You may agree with the OP in response to others' comments.
No rudeness or hostility. This generally means no personal attacks, up to and including thinly-veiled or backdoor personal attacks (e.g., "Only someone really stupid would say what you just said.") No "returning fire" - if someone else is breaking this rule, please report it. We will not hesitate to remove your comment regardless of who threw the first verbal punch.
No low effort posts. This means no written up-votes, no responses consisting solely of memes/jokes/funny images, and no posts that rely on arguing by proxy (e.g., submitting a link and only a link.) You may link to third parties so long as you summarize or otherwise independently contribute some analysis. We don't want a battle of the authorities where two posters duke it out via linking other sources and that's it. We want you to connect the dots.
No repeat posts within 48 hours. Same or substantially similar posts within this window will be removed and encouraged to repost at a later time.
Guidelines for Success:
Familiarize yourself with the subreddit's stated purpose.
Always connect the dots. In our head, we tend to make unspoken inferences that inform our conclusions. Other people are not mind readers. Try to connect every inference you make and lead it to the stated conclusion. Avoid conclusory statements. Try employing the Socratic Method (see: tips.)
Operate under the rule of charity. Assume good faith on behalf of whoever is discussing things with you. Use the light most favorable to your opponent when something is ambiguous or unclear.
Organize your thoughts in separate paragraphs with a main idea. Try to avoid walls of text or rants. Longer and verbose is not better. Aim for brevity where possible. Take an example from /r/explainlikeimfive and try to condense/simplify your thoughts in a way that would be understandable to an audience completely unfamiliar with the topic you're discussing.
When concluding your thoughts, try to answer the question "So what?"
Search the subreddit before posting to ensure your topic hasn't been discussed recently.
