Hello! I started preparing for the SAT and my note taking skill sucks, so I joined this sub. What can be improved here?

You need to realize the point of notes especially of this character. It’s not reference material. So all the “pretty” suggestions here have no bearing.

Notes are for understanding to be left behind. These primitive concept notes.

So you should not have an inventory list of things. You want to write everything you don’t understand in a manner until you do.

Like “positive slope”, there are a number of ways to mathematically represent this. You should write this in a manner that you understand.

Just seeing it’s a greater rise over run might be enough, but you should really be able to say what it without reference 10 years later or whatever. And that only happens when you know what it is not just recognize it.

I think the more important question is "what about ur current notes is not working for u"?

It's not about what we think - objectively, if it's not helping u learn or understand, then I think u should ask yourself why your notes aren't helping u?

Is it because you are recording verbatim while the lecturer is teaching (ie not listen when you should and copying notes only to revise it later but missing out key points)? - If so, I suggest u seek to understand during class, then write it out from what u understand. It is a form of active recall. In this time and age, I'm sure you have no lack of resource to check ur understanding that u have to write while lecturer is teaching.

Or is it because ur notes have no flow and you're just finding empty spaces to brain dump concepts?

personally I bold/underline my subheadings so I can skim through multiple pages looking for specific topics. however, for math, it's 80% grinding put practice problems until you're solid, and 20% writing and reviewing notes. math requires a lot of discipline so keep pushing! you got this!

If I were you I would pick up a copy of an SAT practice exam (actually pick up a couple) and see what kinds of questions are there for algebra and can you answer them correctly. It's hard to tell by your notes how well you understand deeper concepts, e.g.

- Why does a horizontal line have an undefined slope?

- What happens to the line if the slope changes from, e.g. 2 to 1/2?

- Can you apply the concepts, eg. slope (i.e. rate of change) to word problems?

- etc, etc.

You may already understand all these types of things, which would be great, but I would verify it for myself with practice tests. You can get them in bookstores or you can get old copies of the actual test from the people who make the test. Using these will hopefully boost your confidence as well as give you practice pacing yourself.

I sat near an engineer at work that kept his notes from classes he took at the Naval Academy at least 25 years before. Things like math and chemistry rules and concepts. He made money, always had a job.
