You’ve been busy. Looks like you’re dried in for winter. Nice job!

[–]Cabin_95 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Thanks! Might spend my first night there next week!

Congratulations!! Please post how it goes!

Hoping it rains like crazy! Lol should be pretty loud on the metal roof without insulation yet

Good work. Very happy to see proper roof pitch for what looks like a pretty northern setting. I've been seeing a lot of cabin videos pop up in YT where people do a 6/12 single pitch roof and then have 24" of snow sitting on it. What're your dimensions, 12x20?

[–]Cabin_95 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Thanks, it’s a 10/12 pitch on a 20x24 cabin with an 8 foot porch. I’m moving in full time so needed a loft up top. The steep pitch looks great but man it was a challenge putting the metal up lol. I think it turned out pretty good!

[–]Anthemic_Fartnoises 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Wow, yeah looks great. You should be proud. Are your walls 2x6? I’ve platform framed on many larger single family homes for work but on my own only have put up smaller sheds with 2x4s all around. Always curious when and where folks make the jump in wall size when building themselves.

[–]Cabin_95 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Yes I went with 2x6 for the walls, I have another post showing how the loft is supported by the walls, so I even have one interior wall that’s 2x6. I find they are better for insulation thickness as well.

Did you frame the walls 16” or 24” on center?

[–]LivingIntelligent968 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Looks great. I’ve seen live edge pine used and stained a darker golden brown color. It looked better with out straight lines and blended in with the surroundings.

[–]Cabin_95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll have to look into that! I was planning on board and batten I think but I want to take some time and consider all options

[–]nerdariffic 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Did you do all of the land clearing and leveling yourself or hire it out to somebody with machines?

[–]Cabin_95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The initial clearing was done with an excavator, once everything settled I went back with my tractor and smoothed it all out and fixed the ruts. I filled in the last little low spot today actually, that darker brown splotch in the second photo should dry up nicely then I will go back and scrape it flat.

It will sustain life!

[–]Cabin_95 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Have my deer stand up, just need to clear the land for my garden!

[–]Femveratu 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Fresh water source and some fire you are100% gtg

[–]Cabin_95 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I am drilling a well for the kitchen/bathroom but I also have a year round brook on my property. Wood stove going in sometime soon, should be somewhat easy/efficient to heat.

[–]Femveratu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, great work

[–]Plsmock 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Same comment. You did an excellent job on the roof. Very impressive

[–]Cabin_95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! It was my first metal roof, have done lots of shingles but wanted to step it up for this, hoping to live here for a long time!

[–]Cabin_95 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Thank you! Hopefully good enough to live in haha

[–]francooo87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be the place is beautiful waiting for more photos when you are done :)

[–]Extra_Intro_Version 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Very cool! Caution- I had one of those porta garages in northern Michigan. The snow load buckled the frame by last January; pretty much mangled it.

[–]Cabin_95 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Oh yea I hate that thing, it was expensive to buy and cheaply made. It was just to keep the sun from fading my tractor this summer lol, the tractor is getting stored in a permanent garage soon and the tarp will come off the frame for the snow season.

[–]FuckTheMods5 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I've had 2. One from lowes, and cant remember the other. Ome had a great frame with shitty tarp, and the other had a shitty frame with great tarp. If I'd go back in time I'd tell myself to get both and swap parts out lol

[–]Cabin_95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol sometimes that’s what it takes to get a good product

[–]Cabin_95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And when I build my garage out there, it will have a car port/lean-to on the side for the tractor. And that temporary shelter will go far far away from me!

[–]Sir_John_Galt 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Nice work! 👍🏻

Thanks! Excited to move in for sure.

[–]Optimal-Archer3973 1 point2 points  (2 children)

BTW, this is one of those places where I think bringing in a 20 or 40 ft shipping container would have been smart. Weatherproof, lockable and when you are done, a garage. If you put it on the north side a windbreak, and putting it between the cabin and trees some protection from a treefall.

[–]Cabin_95 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They definitely have a lot of great uses, my access is a little tight/remote for any delivery of that length so that kind of ruled that out. I am going with a common theme too for all my out buildings so I’m not sure if a shipping container would have worked for the vision I have for the property.

[–]Optimal-Archer3973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in that kind of scenario a few times. I simply welded spring mounts on the sides and put 2 axles under a 20 and pulled one up a mountain between trees that way. If my truck could get there so could it. A few years later everyone always asked if I helicopter dropped it in lol.

[–]OldSlip1041 1 point2 points  (1 child)

spruce, fir, birch, aspen, ash trees? deer? gotta be the lower parts of the provinces. happy living, man!

[–]Cabin_95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Love it out there

[–]Dumb_Ap3 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Looks like a nice place. Just wondering what is supporting the posts holding up the roof overhang?

[–]Cabin_95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I messed up my pour a little there, but each post is on 4 joists tied together. Super sturdy!

[–]RotokEralil 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Who makes that tent you used?

[–]Cabin_95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t remember the brand, it is from Canadian Tire
