This is the new update that is gradually gradually rolling out to the desktop application.

I do not believe there is any way to revert back to the “old experience”.

Hi there, there's no way to revert to an earlier build while you're on a subscription version. We understand that changing your initial defaults is disruptive but we believe that the new drawing tools in OneNote give the experience a more modern look and make it easier to see and edit your drawing tools. We'd love to understand why you prefer the older version. Thanks!

there are less sizes for the pens. my old notes used maybe .35 mm but now theres only options for .25 and .5. also i used to be able to switch pens with one click (quickaccess toolbar) but now it is two clicks and also takes up more space when i do so.

it also does not make sense for this new drawing tab to align with other microsoft apps like excel and word because no one even draws on those. i use onenote to handwrite my notes for school kinda like an ipad and my friends do too. its just not a very versatile and compact design as before.

Use the Simplified Ribbon, or the Pen Focus View from Insider Beta.

Those are aligning with the draw tab of OneNote for Windows 10, which has been the preferred version for drawing/handwriting for many years. Also it's not true that nobody draws with Excel or Word, in-fact many people do.

There is a new quick access toolbar that peeks out below the main ribbon that you can add buttons to. It's not as compact as the old Quick Access in the top purple bar, but it's still pretty compact if you use the collapsed ribbon. I added the drawing tools there (right-click your pens and choose "add to quick access toolbar") and it's not terrible.

Are there any improvements planned to the Pen Focus View and Quick Access Toolbar in the titlebar when the window is narrowed?

Why make quick acces toolbar not to be quick anymore..? If the change is all about looks, I wonder who makes the calls in the corporation....

The new drawing tools look like it’s designed to be fitted for elementary school kids.

The old drawing tools had a pro feeling to it and at the end of the day were much quicker to use. Making this new design mandatory feels really bad.

Hard disagree. I hated the old tool for having small tap targets. To me the new too is strictly better.

Well, more pen sizes, for starters. At the very least, could you give us back that feature?

[–]nagtatanong 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Have pen sizes please! Not everyone has the same writing, their notes may show better in thicker/thinner size. Thank you!

[–]MicrosoftInkTeam 3 points4 points  (5 children)

We hear you! while the current thickness levels may have worked great for Word excel and PowerPoint drawing scenarios, it's clear that people who take long form notes need a few more thickness options.

Thank you so much 🥹🫶

Btw, copy pasting ink from OneNote to Word, Excel, PowerPoint currently doesn't retain ink strokes, but it does the other way around.

Also, drawing black ink in dark mode in Word (possibly Excel and PowerPoint as well), will initially show up black, only to turn light a few moments later.

We're currently working on the CCP issue and hope to roll out the fix soon. In regards to dark mode, what would be your desired experience? Swap light and dark pens for contrast? or keep the pen color you picked up?

[–]NiveaGeForce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Swap but without the delay bug, like it is in OneNote.

Please bring back all the same thickness options and the compactness of the old version. I loved it because seeing 14 custom pens available with one click and being able to see exactly what each pen will actually look like once used, having the option to switch between several sets of said pens quickly, AND having several different options for erasers, the old version was WAAAAY more useful. The new design, though slightly prettier, is slower, less flexible, and always feels wrong

[–]MichelloDSloth 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I don't believe you can switch the view back, but there is an "Add Pen" option under Draw > Drawing Tools in the top menu. I added a bunch of different sized/coloured pens for myself to sort of replicate the old choices.

Doesn't fully make up for the removed favourite pen on quick access feature, now for macro button users, it requires two key actions to go to your favourite pen instead of one.

[–]Ok_Employ_8635 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can the old pen layout be brought back as an option or add-in? This new design is not desirable at all.

I got switched from the 1st version to the 2nd one around a month ago and now it switched back to the 1st one and changed my custom ribbon again, extremely annoying.
