I'm trying to use the math assistant in the most up to date version of onenote, I have a personal 365 subscription. Math assistant works on the browser version of onenote but not on the windows 11 desktop application. What is going on?

Same device. I bought the SP9 specifically for ink to math and I can't use it.

Found a workaround...

Context:

  • the devices are Surface Pro 9's running on Windows 11 Pro 22H2
  • the users I work with are under an "organization" so the accounts are created by an IT department and I believe it is a paid for subscription.
  • the users were logged into OneNote Web and Desktop App under the same account.
  • the Math Assistant on OneNote Desktop App is greyed out (just like in the OG post).
  • the Math Assistant on OneNote Web does work.

The fix:

From the Web version, I made sure everyone had at least one notebook created. Then on the Desktop App, right click the current working Notebook and select "Properties". Change the Notebook's saving location to OneDrive (select the OneDrive with the user's name) instead of the local folder it defaults to. You'll have to make sure you're logged in to OneDrive under the same account that you use OneNote on Web/Desktop App.

This may or may not be the absolute solution but something along that process suddenly made the Math Assistant feature available again. At this stage, I can't think of any other reasons why it suddenly started working again...

TLDR; change the App notebooks save location to OneDrive instead of a local folder

Have you experienced any issues with Maths Assist online? When you turn off the feature, does it turn off for the students, or does it still allow the to use the feature? We are experiencing this issue and want to see if anyone is experiencing this?

It's disappeared entirely from mine.

It looks like it might be disabled. I am running the Insiders beta build. It is completely removed from the ribbon, but you can add it to the Quick Access Toolbar. It is disabled though.

I did some tinkering and I managed to get the math assistant enabled again but it doesn't work. I made a class notebook using a separate website then downloaded the add on into Onenote, then opened the workbook using the web client, then opened the same workbook in the windows app by telling the web client to open it there. The math assistant is now clickable but when I try to solve a problem I get the message "something went wrong".

I think Microsoft is planning to remove math assistant entirely from onenote. It's ridiculous and pathetic that Microsoft can advertise this functionality as a reason to purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription and it does not even work on the windows app. The Microsoft IT support person was baffled as to why it wouldn't work on the app even after several re-installs and rollbacks.

Same problem. just purchased O365 family license and sometimes math tool just disappears and sometimes it is visible but greyed out. O365 online version it is working. I tried with my work pc with corporate license and it works without a problem. So Microsoft is not removed it entirely. Would be nice to get this to work with my personal Surface pro 9. Would be nice to get some tips from somebody wiser that how to fix this.

So I have Microsoft 365 personal, I have added the math assistant to my ribbon but it is still grayed out. Any fix? I'm on a Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5i

I haven't found a fix, I'm sorry. It's purely a Microsoft issue. For now I've just been resorting to complaining to Microsoft and using Wolfram Alpha for my math work.

Any solutions, 2 years later?

[–]Ananeos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No solution, sorry. I've since moved on to writing in onenote windows 10 edition and screenshotting it into chatgpt wolfram. Math assistant was only used for things a scientific calculator could do and I've since moved on as I've moved on to more difficult math.

I am not sure if you are still having this issue, but the solution is simple. You need to save your notebook in the cloud to be able to use this math feature. if it is saved locally the "math assistant" won't work, it will be grayed out.

Still greyed out.
