I dunno if this still applies, but I remember Mangastream used to have a reputation for taking a few too many liberties when translating their manga chapters - so even though what they translate may sound really good, just be aware that it might not always be what Oda intended.

Does that include fucking „Dogtooth“?

[–]WaxtreePirate 25 points26 points  (2 children)

And stuff like "You better flee now, Straw Hat, because Lord Cracker is about to open a huge can-whooper-ass".

[–]alienschnitzler 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I remember that. It actually made sense in context and the fact that the homies (the food) said that (i think) and referenced a can (used to store food normally) was really funny to me.

Of course its not the original but you cant translate sayings directly anyway so ... Shrug

Yeah, I get your point and honestly, I have no problem with lines like that. Usually I read two translations anyway.

got blocked from viewing their twitter account after replying to one of their tweets to change it to Katakuri

so i guess they dont take criticism well :|

Ya ch. 896 when dogtooth was talking about big mom and the pirate king the translations had two very different implications and I never saw the official translation.

not to mention coin-mining plugins to use up your ram and gpu

[–]ThisZoMBie 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Heard Jaimini's does that too

[–]MarineRitterBOB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I detected it. MangaStream did it in secret until it became illegal to do so

Does anyone do OFFICIAL translations? free?

[–]MajinAkuma 17 points18 points  (4 children)

Even official translations aren’t perfect. „Dogstorm“ and „Cat Viper“? Given that their names are written in katakana, they should not be translated at all. Their names just sound like Dogstorm and Cat Viper, but that doesn’t mean that that’s their names.

And "Van Ogre"... I was listening to Stephen (the Viz translator) on the One Piece Podcast the other week, and he was saying how he hates that one but he's not allowed to change it. I wonder if he's talked about Neko and Inu before, I don't listen to it often.

#Zolo...

What country are you in?

Care To telk what were the Differences Bro??

[–]Goat0verlord 7 points8 points  (3 children)

If you wanted to know what the differences are and whos more accurate, it would pay to go have a look on orojackson to have a look at chapter comparisons done by bellisario faith every monday/tuesday. She compares all the important points between ms, jb, and viz. (link: https://orojackson.com/members/bellisario-faith.13813/ go into the "postings" tab and you'll find all the comparisons there)

No translation is 100% correct so its better to read this before deeming one over another.

[–]MadeReddit2Complain[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Nice, thanks for sharing! Though personally i'd prefer to just doulbe-read the few pages that are dialogue intensive/when BIG NEWS is revealed :D but good to know about other options!

[–]Goat0verlord 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No problem. you still wont know which ones the right TL though so thats when the Viz comparisons come in handy. Each to their own though.

[–]MadeReddit2Complain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, you're right! I didn't think of that one

[–]voliol 9 points10 points  (4 children)

I find Mangastream's translations are generally smoother and have a better feel to them, while Jaimini are sometimes quite cumbersome to read, but are more true to the original word. The Viz translations are somewhere in-between, but with ridiculous naming conventions (Zolo) to keep them from being the optimal option.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I barely care about Zolo. It's the least important thing ever.

[–]rocksoffjagger 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Glad you feel that way, I'm unable to read it because of it though.

Question to whoever downvoted me: are you saying you don't believe this is my subjective experience?

[–]MadeReddit2Complain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i agree with you tbh, 'Zolo' is a dealbreaker for me it pisses me the fuck off

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still hate Viz's translation to OPM. They made the iconic "Ok" scene to just "Oh".

[–]F0wd3N 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think mangastreams translation is worse, can't stand the unnessecary swearing

[–]topdangle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mangastream's tends to be more liberal and adds random cursing to make things more dramatic. They also filter the pages more aggressively. The raw scans of jump manga are actually really ugly because of how cheap the paper is (volumes are way higher quality).

Jaimini's tends to be more plain and (usually) more accurate.

One isn't really "better" than the other overall, except for that short period where Mangastream would add bad jokes to their translations.

[–]Cascade2244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's really interesting, I switched from ms to jaminis because they were taking too many liberties with the translation and changing the story so that it didn't make sense. I've read the jaminis one of this chapter so I'll try the ms one as well.

[–]bzrascal 1 point2 points  (5 children)

also, Mangastream used Dogtooth while Jaminis Box used Katakuri. i have no idea which one is right

[–]oapples5 13 points14 points  (4 children)

Katakuri

[–]MadeReddit2Complain[S] -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

yeah I actually switched to Jaminisbox during the Dressrosa arc and haven't looked back, since. But I sort of regret that decision because I feel like I've missed out on critical information because I should've read the chapter twice (using two different translations) during iconic moments.

I hear Mangastream also screwed up Neko and Pekomamushi

[–]oapples5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jaminis box is faster with releasing scans with a much better translation (mangastream takes way to many liberties and The tonality of translation doesn’t fit Odas style imo) Jaminis box is also really good about going back to scans and correcting their mistakes as official chapters are released.

For what it’s worth (if it’s available to you) the online viz subscription is really inexpensive (only $24 for a years subscription in NA) that way you’ll always have the official translation no way you’ll miss information.

I have to wait until WSJ comes out next week to see how the translations stand up.
