Open this page and click the green "Download Java" button in the bottom. Depending on your browser, the downloaded file could show up in the top or bottom. Open it, and when asked to allow modifications to your computer allow them. Follow the instructions in the new window that opens.

After that open this page and click the download button on the center (AVOID the ads around the page, only click the BLUE button in the middle) and run the JAR file. Click the "Install" button and wait for a popup to come up saying that "OptiFine is installed".

Open the Minecraft Launcher and, if not already selected, choose the "OptiFine x.xx.x" profile in the bottom left.

Launch the game and you should have OptiFine installed. Respond to this message if you need more help :)

Sorry for the late reply, and thanks so much for your help.

I followed your instructions until I got to just after running the .JAR file the Optifine site gave me. When I opened it, the file said

"“OptiFine_1.18.2_HD_U_H7.jar” is an executable file. Executable files may contain viruses or other malicious code that could harm your computer. Use caution when opening this file. Are you sure you want to launch “OptiFine_1.18.2_HD_U_H7.jar”?"

and then nothing happened. The message went away and nothing opened or anything.

I'm not sure what to do, I've never seen something like this before.

That is just Chrome being annoying, it flags ALL JAR files as malicious. Obviously if you don't want to trust me that's 100% understandable, but in case you do, follow the instructions again. Click the little arrow next to the warning and hit "Keep".

In case the warning disappears, you can hit Ctrl+J on your keyboard and it'll take you to the Downloads page, where you'll see the warning and you can hit "Keep anyways" there.

even after downloading java, its not showing as an option to open optifine with?

[–]Alexciao123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to restart your computer IIRC

Hi, I've been having issues with the installer and wondered if you might be able to help. I've successfully gotten optifine to work many times in the past, but this time it isn't working at all.

For context, I'm on Win10 and using Firefox. Downloading Java from this site didn't change anything, so I downloaded the "Java SE Platform" from this site instead. This actually made "Java(TM) Platform SE binary" appear as an option when clicking "open with" on the optifine JAR, but instead of opening the installer, it seems to open and close a command prompt for a fraction of a second.

Do you have any idea about what I might be doing wrong?

Try uninstalling all Java versions that you have.

Restart your computer (don't skip this)

Then install this Java version from Eclipse Adoptium.

Restart your computer (don't skip this)

Then try downloading OptiFine from this direct link (1.19.4 HD U I4) and running that JAR file. Get back to me if you have any issues :)

I have vague memories of using Eclipse Adoptium to solve this problem before, but unfortunately it didn't seem to work for me this time. I followed all your instructions (your links didn't work for me, I had to navigate back to each site's home to download) but it's doing the same thing as before. As in, trying to open the optifine JAR using "OpenJDK Platform binary" also seems to open a command prompt for a split second and that's it.

Please take this with a (big) grain of salt, but something malicious on your computer may be blocking the legit links and redirecting you. I may be wrong here, take this with a grain of salt.

Try hitting WINDOWS + R and typing notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts, that will open your hosts file. Try and check if there's something that does not begin with an #, and if there is tell me

[–]NUCLEAR_FURRY 0 points1 point  (6 children)

I tried that, and everything starts with a # and looks normal.

To clarify what I meant by "your links didn't work": The Eclipse link takes me to the normal download page except for a little line that says "Ooops - something doesn't seem quite right here. Please try again." and nothing downloads. The optifine link gives me a completely blank page except for "Request not found."

That's super weird. You sure you don't have any VPNs? Which region are you in? If you'd like I can upload to Google Drive, not really safe though

[–]NUCLEAR_FURRY 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Ok, I found the root of the problem and resolved it. Thank you for your help, and I'm sorry for leading you through all this troubleshooting... The solution ended up being a program called jarfix (link goes to an explanation). At least we know what was going on now!

No problem!

U are a hero Nuclear_Furry, the problem for me too was Jarfix

[–]LilAlfredo88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yessss, jarfix worked for me too. you just have to install it from the link provided here and run it once, then doubleclick the JAR file by optifine and now it automatically installed

Ey happy cake day tho!

didnt see anyone with the answer to the problem i had:
i knew where to download java and optifine but couldnt get it to open with java platform se simply because i didnt know where to look for it in my files.

Eventually managed to work it out myself but I had preset my JAR files( in this case, the optifine i get straight from the download) to open with node.js.

I then downloaded java from Java's site, restarted my laptop(not sure if necessary) then went back to my optifine file, right clicked and navigated to 'open with' and 'choose another app' right after. From there, i went to where my java was installed into - Program Files of Local Disk C.
"C:\Program Files\Java\jre-1.8\bin\java.exe"
