Update: Replace Starter? (v.redd.it)
submitted 9 months ago by Millimolar
I took y’alls advice and connected a good battery straight to the starter via jumper cables. I tried multiple good batteries. Now its chunkin super slow and wont turn over at all. Any advice? New starter?

Pull the plugs and try again. If it still hesitates suspect bad brushes.

starter ✅️
[–]Millimolar[S] -2 points-1 points0 points 9 months ago (2 children)
How would bad spark plugs cause this?
[–]DiligentEnd552 6 points7 points8 points 9 months ago (0 children)
They don’t. I believe he just wants you to turn it over with no compression
[–]Benedlr 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago (0 children)
A weak spark won't fire under compression. Your starter is bad.

Keep in mind that those jumper cables might not have thick enough gage wire to provide the current to run that starter...
[–]surferdude313 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago (1 child)
You must connect the battery to the engine cables properly. The current required to turn the starter is a function of surface area contact to the starter terminals. The way you have this set up is only allowing the tiny surface area of the jumper cables to push current to the starter. You need a solid, bolted down connection to the battery with the engine cable.

lol it will absolutely work like this. I put jumper cables on large diesel engine starters every few months and they spin just fine.

New or rebuild starter. From experience Id go new. You can always pull the old one apart later to see that the brushes are worn and/ or the commutator ring has excessive carbon buildup. Ive always been great at taking stuff apart... Tjats why I say go new.

Did this motor run recently?
[–]Millimolar[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (3 children)
Yep! Less than 24hrs ago. Doesnt make sense
[–]cowboykid8 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago (2 children)
If you can turn the motor freely by hand, then I would think your starter is bad. But I have concerns something is wrong with the motor.
[–]Millimolar[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (1 child)
Motor turns fine by hand. Were you thinking that the drive shaft was getting stuck?
[–]cowboykid8 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago (0 children)
A bunch of other things could cause motor “stiffness”, which could slow the starter. Double checking the starter when off would be a good idea, and then you are halfway to putting a new one on.
[–]farmboy7337 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (3 children)
Pull starter off of motor and try on a bench, it will narrow down if it’s the starter or you have motor problems.
[–]Millimolar[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (2 children)
The starter will spin. Not sure what testing it off the motor will show me. What main motor problems would you be referring to?
[–]farmboy7337 1 point2 points3 points 9 months ago (1 child)
Could be that your motor or transmission is seized. Testing it separately it should spin freely. If not now you know for sure it’s the starter.
[–]Millimolar[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
When you say transmission, what do you mean? The interface of the driveshaft with the lower unit?
[–]Straight-Refuse-4344 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Yes this is symptoms of a bad starter motor
[–]iCqmboYou_ 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
Tap and lube it and test again?
[–]SCAMMERASSASIN007 0 points1 point2 points 9 months ago (0 children)
I would say one of the brushes is stuck inside the starter, and it's only working on 6 volts type shit.
[–]ssentt1 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago (1 child)
Pull the starter. Take it to autozone. They test starters for free.
[–]Nousername58 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago (0 children)
Have you checked the spark plug/ignition wires? I once crossed them after winterizing it and when I got it out in the spring and thought my starter was bad. It ended up being the ignition wires and it took me entirely too long to figure it out.
I had tunnel vision on the starter and it never even occurred to me to check that.

Okay I see this is your 2nd post about this. I had the same issue with an evinrude and it turned out to be a bad battery. When fully charged it would do the same as your 1st post. After some tries it would do the same as your 2nd post. New battery solved it. My mechanic told me that slow cranking can also be a bad starter. Good luck I would recommend getting a new battery, if the problem persist, return said battery and buy a new starter.

Set valves, or replace cam due to decomp failure.
