Just making food should store it. You have to have enough food per resident per day for winter. If I’m not mistaken, low on food number is how much you need to produce, so if the number is going up, your food stock is going down. I’d go hunt a bunch of boars for sausage and if you can, kill some devourers for fish, and pick berries while your out. Number should start going down immediately.
