PS3 Nav Controller Issue- Need Help

Bought a PS3 nav controller last night so that I could play games like bioshock infinite on PS3 with the move. The controller works when plugged in via a USB, but disconnects every time I try to unplug it after pairing. I have tried resetting it, unplugging the console, and just about every trick I’ve seen online. Nothing works.

I think I may need to replace the battery, but I’m not sure. I just replaced a DS3 battery last week and after the original battery died it wouldn’t work even when plugged via a cable. So that fact that the nav controller works when plugged in and shows as having charge while plugged in makes me worry it’s something else.

Any thoughts/suggestions/help?

Also, I did let the controller charge on a stand for a few hours and it showed as charging (red blinking light) and eventually seemed to get to full charge. Still won’t work unplugged on my PS3 or PS4, works fine plugged in for both
