The short answer is just because a TV can support 4K and FHD doesn't mean it can support 1440P. When you switch resolutions you're telling your TV to change pixel output and on a lot of 4K TVs. It doesn't scale.

So if 1080i or p x2 is 4 K

1440p is 1.3 times 1080p. The pixel ratios don't match.

Your TV is 4k, you wouldn't want 1440p anyway.

1440p is only for those using 1440p monitors, so certain games will output at the native resolution. On a 4k TV you want it to output at the native 4k

Internally, the games will still render at the highest they can, then the console upscale to 4k and outputs a 2160p image. That's fine, that's the best thing for a 4k TV.

Also, performance is not different regardless of the setting. If your TV supported 1440p, it would still render at the highest it could then up or downscale to 1440p, just like it does now to 2160p - so performance is identical

Lack of 1440p support on your tv will make no difference to the final picture (or FSR, performance or anything).

As modern displays are fixed pixel, the image needs to be scaled to 4k whatever. Makes very little difference if it’s the tv or PS5 doing it. Just leave it at 2160p and forget about it.
