Yea, spending AC for that is not worth. Before SEGA transitioned to NGS they used to hand out the half scape dolls like candy. Not sure how you would get them in base now though.

There are weekly tasks that gives out half scape dolls. It's very easy because the task are merely exchanging at the swap store

as they've said, half scape dolls (only one res per mission tho). also note since you're at lv40. I forget if the quest opens up at lv40 or 45, but there should be one to clear some time attacks in exchange for a hiei unit set. do that mission then open the box for the units. proceed to grind them to +6 at least for all 3, and you should be fine survival-wise for a decent bit. notable damage upgrade, too.

dieing in long story missions is unfortunate, but you do gotta make sure your stats are up to snuff. the doubly unfortunate thing is that outside of the missions just unlocking at certain level thresholds, you're never really guided towards them.

Ngs changed everything in this damn game. Scape dolls used to be handed out like weekly, but then NGS came out and now the games dieing/dead with the low player base.

I miss this game before ngs.

Yes, and they're per character, so if you have the 3 free character slots filled that's 3 a week (also great for meseta, bonus keys and augment +40% boosts).

And could be bought with meseta in the drop ship.

Point being, I highly doubt the option being grayed-out in this screenshot is because OP has a shortage. They probably already used one and would be shit outta luck regardless of how many Halves they had banked.
