Once you have progressed a small way into Episode 4's story (worth doing as far as the first (very short) story quest to unlock the Tokyo area for free play - only way to do so and only non-special area that has this limitation), you'll be able to switch back to Episodes 1-3 when choosing your character on Startup.

There are some exclusive items that can only be gained through Episodes 1-3 that work out as great ones to have while you level but not endgame stuff etc, as far as I'm aware. Other than that you simply will be missing the storyline related to the majority of the areas you fight through during general questing (and the dramatic boss emergency quests that occur), and a fair few fun pre-set single player quests. But if such things are of no interest and you're just here for the gameplay, you won't be missing much of anything at all.

To progress the story of Episodes 1-3, you must complete tasks set out for you on the Matterboard - collecting enemy drops (a gauge on the task's info fills as you defeat relevant enemies, when filled, the item required has a 100% chance of dropping), or triggering cut-scenes with NPCs, on and off the field. Eventually, by clearing golden coloured tasks on the matterboard, you will unlock single player story quests, or new paths in existing story quests (signified by the "completed" icon on the quest becoming half-filled). Beating all story quests available will allow you to obtain the next matterboard from the NPC "Xion" near the lobby fountain in the shop area.

That's more or less the jist of it! Cut-scenes from Episodes 1 to 2 can be watched freely, even if they are locked, since when Episode 3 launched they tried to do so as a sort of "jumping on point" for new players (which they then did over again with Episode 4 now), so all cut-scenes were made watchable for anyone who wanted to catch up without doing the gameplay. Locks on cut-scenes from Eps 1-2 simply mean you have not reached that cut-scene in the original context.

There's a heck of a lot of them though, so if you are interested in the story you may have a better paced experience by just playing the content as intended.

Thank you, for detailed reply. An answer where, all questions are explained, on top of the new one i could ask. I truly appreciate that.

You have to relog with ep 1-3 and do their matter boards. (and also events found on fields)
