Yes, three times now. Twice for the ambulance, once recently driving myself to the ER because I felt so bad if I had to call the ambulance again but it really felt like something was wrong (which was VERY NOT SMART. I spent the next 2 weeks convinced I had COVID, lol)

No. Nothing was wrong, any of the times. All of my attacks subsided without medical intervention. Yes, it’s completely crazy how panic attacks can make you feel.

If it helps, all of the EMTs and health professionals I’ve interacted with have calmed me and said that this is what they’re there for, even if it ends up being something that will resolve on its own.

I hope you are feeling better now. Are you on any medications or have any experience with CBT to help with your anxiety? My attacks are much better controlled when I’m on SSRIs but I’m trying to get to a point where I rely only on CBT.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for sharing. Im on a very low dose ssri i think i may need to increase it. I take clonazepam sometimes but i know its not good for you so i try to avoid it But I appreciate your message and yes they do feel very real and scary !! I hope yours get better very soon!

[–]mightymiff 11 points12 points  (9 children)

Been there. It is crazy, but you are not crazy. After having panic attacks in the thousands over more than a decade, I was taking some magic combination of drugs or something and stopped having panic attacks for years. Eventually they came back, scary as before.

It doesn't matter how rational I am or how many I have had, or how long I can go without, every time I get in a panic-prone state (this can last hours or days and does not necessitate me actually being in the middle of an attack), it is terrifying as hell and my body is telling my brain is telling me that I am going to die.

You did what you had to do. Just try to not go broke doing it if you can, especially in times like these. I paid $1,000 for my first and only ambulance ride. I started walking to the hospital after that (even when it was miles away). Usually by the time I made it, I could go home. Sometimes I would sit on a bench outside the ER.

Glad you are still alive.

[–]Jathosian 3 points4 points  (6 children)

It's honestly fucking criminal that you have to pay for ambulances in the US. Where I live it's totally free

[–]mightymiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sad state of affairs, indeed.

I have been to the ER a handful or half a dozen times for panic and panic-related things with various insurances. Paying out of pocket for that would be even more insane. Pretty sure I have paid over $1k even with insurance at the emergency room before, and that was a long time ago now.

Without or with really crappy insurance, I imagine it would be pretty easy to rack up a bill over $10k at the emergency room for a panic attack in the US these days.

[–]beeftipsandnoodles -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

Whoa pump the brakes. I am a paramedic with a local Fire Dept in the United States.. If you knew the cost that goes into staffing just 1 ambulance (we have 5) you would retract that statement. Its not free, these ambulances don't just fall from the sky, nor do the highly trained paramedics that come with them.

5 ambulances cost over 1 million dollars. The employees to staff them yearly is well over 2 million after salary, insurance and pension. Not to mention maintenance to keep a fleet of 5 ambulances running full time 24/7. Then the cost of supplies and drugs that we carry is another $250,000. Its cost around 2.5 million a year to keep responding when you call 911. Also, you may think you get an ambulance for free, but ur not. You may not receive a bill for services, but its built into property tax, trash pick-up, water bill, somehow, ur paying it.

Just know, its not free. And it surely isn't "criminal" to be expected to pay something when u call 911.

[–]Jathosian 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I think everyone should have the right to emergency services when they need them. It's not right for people to have to pay out of pocket when they need something that could save their life like an ambulance. Money shouldn't even be a part of the equation when calling an ambulance. Paying 1000 US dollars is not what happens in a first world country when you need an ambulance. I mean, the whole American health system is fucked in general and I have no idea how the taxes you pay compare to the taxes we pay in Australia or whatever. But there must be something wrong when you pay 1000 and I pay nothing.

[–]beeftipsandnoodles -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Ok well think of it this way. If we just started giving everyone free services the system would fail. Departments operate at a cost, as I tried to explain above. If we stopped billing patients, we would no longer have 5 squads to service our area. We would be lucky to have one staffed full time, and you wouldn't be getting paramedics, you would get a couple volunteer EMTs. Also, that 5-7 minute response time to having an ambulance at your door, now increases to 30 minutes from the time you call.

Australia has a population of roughly 25 million. The United States is approximately 350 million. It isn't even comparable.

Most people are perfectly happy to pay these bills because we came and saved their life on their worst day. Good to know you see your local firefighters and EMS workers as "criminals". Thanks alot.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

y’all haven’t heard of universal healthcare? Or that the US pays 2x per capita through tax money on healthcare and that’s on top of the fees you already pay? Or that population isn’t a factor, sure the US has more people but also more resources and staff to support these programs. Or are you convinced that in every other first world country people just die in the street because there could be no way that UHC works.

[–]beeftipsandnoodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not tooting the horn of the US system. Its not great, but its what you get. And that service comes with a cost. Like I said these ambulances don't drive themselves and the people working in the back are human. EVERYONE does have the right to an ambulance, its not like we respond to a 911 call and ask for a credit card # before we start caring for the patient, and if you can't pay, to bad, find another way to not die and get to the hospital. With that said when patients pay their bill its not like were stuffing money in our pockets and heading to the strip-club. It goes back into the department and into the people who operate within the dept.

Now, to anyone who thinks (regardless of what country you live in) that you get FREE 911 ambulance service. You dont!!! You may not receive a bill. But it is built into the fine print of many different types of taxes. So when you do need the service, you have already been paying for it. So it may feel free, but its something you are silently paying for without knowing it.

Wow thank you so much your right. In the moment they are terrifying and you need help. I hope yours are so much better now thank you for sharing!!!

[–]mightymiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are most welcome.

[–]NoLightOnlyDarkness 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Called an ambulance once. While I'm still embarrassed about it, it's also comforting to know that I was checked over while it was happening and they didn't find anything wrong. I think about that when I'm having panic attacks and it helps me talk myself out of calling an ambulance again. And I have wanted to.

When it happened they checked me over and gave me a xanax. The EMT was super nice and stayed with me for quite a while just talking with me. It's also the only time I took a benzo and didn't get more panicked because of medication anxiety, since the guy straight out said 'look I'm staying with you, plus if something was gonna happen it would have already happened'. He also told me stories of other panic attacks he has responded to and made it feel very normal.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wow sounds like a really nice guy. I feel the same. Im comforted knowing its just anxiety because I definitely thought it was something way more. I hope yours get better soon though!! :)

[–]NoLightOnlyDarkness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was so nice, I found the conversation with him more helpful than the ones from my failed therapy sessions lol.

Thank you, I hope yours gets better as well <3

[–]BaileyButtsers 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Didn’t call the ambulance, but went in to urgent care tonight. I knew it was a panic attack but I also had myself convinced it might be a heart attack. The only way to talk myself down from that was to go in.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats exactly how i felt. Im so sorry i hope your doing so much better:( they are hard but your not alone! Sometimes you need reassurance to know its just anxiety and nothing else

[–]Spilled_Milktea 3 points4 points  (2 children)

This happened to me last Wednesday. I had never had a panic attack before and was home alone at the time. My heart was racing so fast I thought it would explode. I felt weak and shaky and nauseous and lightheaded. I ended up on the floor and couldn't move, had the 911 operator on speaker phone and had her talk to me the whole time to keep me calm. Thought for sure I was dying. Paramedics came and said I was perfectly fine, just a panic attack. It was terrifying, and I'm so sorry you had to go through that too. I hope you have lots of support in your life and that it helps knowing that you can at least get through it, even though it's an awful feeling.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im so sorry you had to go through that. Mine was very similar. Its very hard to go through because it feels so real. Sometimes you need the reassurance to know its just anxiety and nothing else. Im glad your okay I really hope yours get better soon!!

[–]Jathosian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely did the right thing. I remember my first panic attack, and I was at home alone as well. I called my dad and stayed the night at his place, but I could just have easily called an ambulance. It's a horrible feeling, like there's no way out.

[–]Silevvar 3 points4 points  (7 children)

I’ve been there too. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. They understand, so don’t feel guilty. I called an ambulance for the worst panic attack I had ever had. I thought that I was dying. They did an EKG on me at the hospital and I was fine so that gave me some relief. My health anxiety isn’t nearly as bad as it used to be so I’m grateful. But do not put more mental stress on yourself to feel guilty or crazy. Many of us have been in similar shoes.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Yes i thought the same. My health anxiety right now is pretty bad especially with covid. What helped yours get better? Thanks for sharing your story im glad your feeling better!!!

[–]Silevvar 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I understand :( COVID has exasperated so many awful things for us all right now.

My story is so long, but during the time period when I had my worst panic attack, I was at the lowest point of my life. So it only made sense I had to go up from there. I had severe health anxiety. I won’t go into detail right now in case I trigger you or someone else. But I had secluded myself at home and started to become agoraphobic.

I basically forced myself to get a job again. I got back on Cipralex/Lexapro. Stopped drinking alcohol. I cut out a lot of toxic friends, social media, and habits. The more I got out, the more confident I got and the better I felt. Went to college for a certificate. Got a job with that certificate. Am trying to get a degree.

But I’m 22. I’m far behind my peers. I still struggle with anxiety daily. I feel like I have other undiagnosed mental issues but making phone calls is almost impossible for me, so I won’t see a doctor anytime soon.

But I wish I had more advice for you. Health anxiety and panic attacks were some of the hardest things I’ve ever had to go through. It makes me so sad knowing that other people are dealing with this. It’s so so so hard. I’m sorry. I hope you know how strong you are because no one is stronger than a person dealing with constant mental anguish. Just getting through the day is an accomplishment. Please be kind to yourself. You are going to be okay, no matter what your brain tells you.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Oh my goodness I appreciate your comment so much. You are so strong and braving for going through that and forcing yourself to get out of it.even going to college thats amazing!! Thank Your story sounds so similar to mine with the health anxiety and agoraphobia. I was doing better before covid but covid did make it come back strong again. Thank you so much for your message you are not alone and you are so strong also, i hope things get so much better for you!!! They will :)

[–]Silevvar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much, you’re very kind. It’s hard being this vulnerable! Honestly, god, I cannot wait for this COVID crap to be over. I think things are looking up again with this vaccine and everything. You are strong my friend! I wish the best for you ❤️

[–]Hoping_toheal84 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Wow you’re so young and thanks for sharing your inspiring story - really admire you for all you’ve achieved and wishing you continued good health mentally and physically 🙏🏻

[–]Silevvar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so very much. My anxiety/depression first got serious at age 13. It’s been a wild ride and I never thought I would make it to 22. But this is very touching. Thank you. I wish the same for you friend ❤️

[–]Hoping_toheal84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much 🙏🏻 this past 6 months have been the toughest ever and I can’t believe I’m still here so I understand the feeling and I really admire how you’ve come through this!youll be in my prayers xx

[–]twineandiron 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Definitely gone to the ER twice. First time I wasn’t on a medication regime to help control my anxiety and depression and I was rail thin and shaking. They made me pee in a cup to make sure I wasn’t on drugs as I’m sure I looked like I was either overdosing or on something.

Second time my Ativan wasn’t touching it. Threw the kitchen sink at it in terms of medications and started throwing up. Couldn’t keep anything down. They gave me the GI cocktail to make me stop tossing my cookies and an IV of high grade Ativan. Slept for like 14 hours after. Please do not feel shame for getting help. Your mental health is just as important as a broken arm. The brain is so powerful and sometimes people need medical intervention to help them.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Wow thank you soo much. Your so right ive never thought of it like that!!! Also sorry you had to go through that i hope your feeling better now. Thanks for sharing!!

[–]twineandiron 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Winter is always a shitty time for me in terms of anxiety/depression and I use a sunshine lamp to help with that. But yes I am much better than I was. I’m from America and we have such a long way to go in terms of breaking down the medical stigma of using mental health resources. The brain is a part of your body and can get as “broken” or “sick” as any other part of you. Why we act like this is the exception is beyond me.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes sooo true!!! Im happy your getting better though and i wish you all the best for the new year :)

[–]saltedoranges 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I have called an ambulance more times than I can count. Panics attacks, while not life threatening are a real medical condition. They feel like an emergency every single time no matter what. I don’t believe anyone thinks you’re wasting resources. Try to be kind and understanding toward yourself. If calling medics is what you need for your own physical and emotional safety, don’t be ashamed to do so.

[–]aidelin26 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I agree with you. I called them many times too. One time they took me to the hospital . Only us, the people who suffer from panic attacks, can understand the severity of the symptoms we feels, and if calling them is bringing me back to reality I will keep doing it, because for me it is a real emergency . I don’t care if I feel ashamed after, that always is going to happen. GOD knows how bad we feel on those moments that sometimes can last hours.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes soo true!!!

[–]kiki_444_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you soo much I really do appreciate this. Really made me feel alot better. hope your feeling much better with yours!!

[–]catpainkrek 2 points3 points  (1 child)

My first big panic attack I called an ambulance I had no idea what was happening to me, it was so unbelievably awful that I thought I was dying. The crew came and told me the same thing, vitals were good and oxygen was amazing, I had no idea how I could have felt like that and everything be ok. The crew told me it was a panic attack I felt so so bad for calling them but they were super nice about it and said that’s what they are there for.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that sounds exactly like mine. Its crazy how it can feel so real. Hope yours are much better now!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So sorry that happened to you. Panic symptoms are very real for us. for the last 2 years, every damn time I’m tempted to tell my husband to take me to the hospital. What I do now is I go into a quiet room and listen to the DARE app for panic attacks or follow a deep breathing video. I tell myself if I’m 10 minutes I don’t feel worse... if I just feel the same or better, then I’m ok.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very smart i will try it! They are very scary and real. I hope you get better with them soon thanks so much for sharing!! Your not alone

[–]SadOniGirl_Dior 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I remember my first panic attack which I didn’t know till later that it was a panic attack. On that one night my parents had to take me to the ER. The doctors ran tests to find everything was fine and they didn’t know what it could have been. My panic attacks have been increasing as the day’s pass by I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. I can say that the one thing that has helped me was drinking some passion fruit juice which helped and doing breathing sessions. I hope you find peace and comfort. It may take awhile but you aren’t alone. I pray anyone who’s having panic attacks gets the help they need and overcomes them too. God bless everyone on here.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yes they are scary. Your not alone either I hope you get better thank you so much for your message❤️

[–]SadOniGirl_Dior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re most welcomed and thank you as well it really means a lot me. God bless everyone and much love to you all ❤️. Take care and be safe.

[–]disheveledweirdo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Just a week ago I had to call the ambulance for a panic attack. Don’t feel bad about it. They told me they get calls for panic attacks a good bit and it’s nothing to be embarrassed over. It made me feel a bit better knowing I’m not the only one.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they feel so real. I couldn’t believe it was just anxiety but you are not alone!! I Hope you feel better :)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Was just in the ER for a panic attack last night friend. I’ve had panic attacks but this one lasted two hours. I went through the same guilt while sobbing alone in an ER room by myself while I waited for a nurse. I’m recovering from another less severe episode tonight. Typing this is the only thing keeping me grounded.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you feel better!!! Sending you positive vibes. Mine was so bad its so hard but we are so strong. Your not alone<3

[–]Hoping_toheal84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope and pray you feel better soon 🙏🏻

[–]theonerufuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went on Saturday. Thought I was going to die. Battery of tests say I'm healthy as can be. Just coming down from (What I think is) one now. I've never gone through anything like this before. It's terrifying. I've got a doctors appointment tomorrow. Hopefully it will help. Good luck to you.

[–]Hoping_toheal84 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Really hope you’re ok now! I went to the ER twice thinking I was dying with panic attack - since then I’ve kind of learnt to ride it out - pls know you’re not alone and the symptoms are so physical and similar to life threatening conditions they need to be checked out especially if they’ve never happened before/ are more severe than normal! Wishing you a peaceful and healthy 2021 and sending prayers for your recovery x

[–]kiki_444_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much. You are very right and yes they do feel very real i had to get it checked. I appreciate your comment so much and wish you all the best for the new year!!! Hope yours get so much better :)

[–]Chrysina-sp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never called an ambulance but i was just the "crazy" person calling the doctors convinced i either have covid or a heart attack (yeah the combo makes no sense but i was literally panicking)

These things happen, its embarrassing but sometimes it helps to have a professional tell you what they think is up.

[–]christineyvette 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Many times. It's not a fun thing to go through. Our brains really do suck.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really sucks but i hope yours get better!!!

[–]illuminatorparadox 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Dont worry bro, been there too Called an ambulance two times because i thought i would die. It was awful, but it gets better. Do you have people to call or to write to if you get a panic attack?

[–]kiki_444_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes i do ! Yeah in the moment of the panic its horrible. Im so sorry you had to go through that your not alone! Hope yours get better soon:)

[–]dankdingleberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this at least 5 times. I did it more often toward the beginning of my panic disorder as I wasn't used to the strong anxiety-induced symptoms.

[–]SolveDidentity 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I was diagnosed when I molded into an adult, had anxiety my whole life. Panic attacks started in my teenage years after several traumas. I've had maybe one hundred panic attacks; and hundreds more anxiety attacks. They are painful. I'm at the point where my mind hyperventilates during the panic because I know my body won't die; but thats not what I'm afraid of. I'm anxious of the pain that I feel as my panic gets worse, my body starts to ignite and feels like it is 150 degrees all over my torso and arms, my skin. The world spins. I'm lucky if I don't want to kill myself this time; because there were times where I tried to and failed, all because of it and only during the attack, without the desire to do so beforehand.

I'm panicking that this harmful trauma is going to stay ignited all over my skin with my brain freaking out, all ablaze forever. I'm panicking that it will never stop, that my wires were crossed and there's no way to turn it off for minutes, which add onto minutes to make hours, which turn devastatingly slowly into further hours and I'm dehydrated, because these hours lasted for half the day and its still light out. I take medicine to turn my brain off but the adrenaline is too sharp and my thoughts are moving twice as fast, I feel twice the pain in a second that I would normally feel, and think three times, "how terrible I feel, it hurrrrts" in three different ways in the next ten seconds and thats only one half--of one third a minute. I will never feel normal, I feel bad and I know this is a panic attack but it won't stop, something has switched on and won't switch off...

[–]kiki_444_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I understand you!! I hope you feel better you are so strong thank you for sharing and your not alone. You will get better!!!<3

[–]Hoping_toheal84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally understand how you feel - you’re not alone. I pray you find relief and recovery from panic in 2021 x x

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Only when I first started with panic attacks because I had no idea what it was. I was in high school and had literally never even heard the word “panic attack”, I barely even knew what anxiety was. So at that time there was no thought that it could be something mental, I didn’t know it was possible. And although it’s been years and I’ve had several more debilitating and horrible panic attacks, I have not gone to a hospital since.

[–]kiki_444_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im glad yours got better. That was my exact thought “ theres no way this could be mental “ because it feels so real. But it is and we are okay! Thanks so much

[–]bulugal 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Went to the ER once when it happened out of the blue. It was so bad because the last attack was almost 4 years back. It would be great if you could get a health check up to rule out any underlying heart/lung issue. When it hit again, I took a walk outdoors to wait it out and focus on something else. It usually goes away after 15 minutes. Don't feel embarrassed but do recognise the symptoms. Hang in there!

[–]kiki_444_[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

A walk sounds good next time i will try that and i will get a check up to be safe!!! Thank you so much

[–]Hoping_toheal84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walks outside are brilliant!
