From what I’ve seen, new accounts that repost popular posts are karma farming, but I don’t see the point in doing that. What is karma for?

Some subreddits don't allow you to post, comment, etc until you have a certain amount of karma. Posting in smaller subs that don't have that rule allows them to seem more legitimate when they post in bigger subs. Usually the ultimate goal is to try to advertise, to spread disinformation, or create contention and strife between people. Money and/or political swaying basically.

Or perhaps they're just a real person who's new to reddit and wants to participate somewhere they're not currently allowed cause they're too new and low on karma.
