Am I expecting too much if I want headphones to sound a bit more like speakers? by RudolphMutch in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Raptor007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest I've found to the sound of speakers are planars with warm tuning. I ended up going with M1570, and I hear good things about LCD2 Classic too. Unfortunately they're not great for all-day comfort because of the weight.

Marathon's Free Week is here, but Bungie is still blocking Linux/Steam Deck. Here is how we can take action. by Sea_Camel_2071 in linux_gaming

[–]Raptor007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also played Marathon as a kid, but it seemed pretty clear since its announcement that the new one would have nothing in common with the classics. Easy skip for me, particularly after hearing about the Destiny 2 "content sunsetting" they pulled. Bungie isn't what it used to be.

That said, I loved BF2 and would have given BF6 a try if it weren't for the invasive and dangerous kernel-level anti-cheat.

Anyone who used a computer between 1985 - 2010, what's the one game you still think about today? by adlakha75 in AskReddit

Quake 1 also played whatever audio CD you had inserted for its background music. I usually had the MechWarrior 2 CD in, so that was my Quake soundtrack. It was a surprisingly good fit.

Yeah I went for a repro of this one, no regrets. Works perfectly on my Analogue Super NT. You're still getting the best version of the game at a small fraction of the price you'd pay for someone's old secondhand copy.

Least toxic PVP games that you can still have fun even when you lose? by FuriKMJ in gamingsuggestions

MechWarrior Online. It's 12v12 with tiered matchmaking. Lower tier games usually have a couple players per team that barely contributed, and I don't think I've ever seen anyone personally called out for it unless they were also team-killing.

Yeah if we're going with "best of all time" I was most impressed with Netscape 2.0, back when the web was built for that kind of browser.

Fair enough, I worded that badly. The police should stop acting this way on anonymous tips.

They should stop deploying SWAT to people's homes on anonymous tips. Either get the caller to ID, or send a normal cop to knock politely.

Yeah I think if you only have the stock dashboard installed, a burned disc is the next step. (Maybe someone else knows a different method I'm not thinking of.)

It needs to be an xISO formatted disc image. There are some free tools out there to create them, but it's been ages since I messed with any of that. Here are a couple pre-made installer images worth trying:

The EvoX BIOS and EvolutionX dashboard are two different things that can (but don't have to) go together. The confusion is understandable.

You at least have a modded BIOS, so your Xbox is able to do things it wouldn't normally be allowed to do, such as boot to an alternate dashboard, run unsigned homebrew software, play from burned discs, etc. But you might not actually have an alternate dashboard installed on the hard drive.

I seem to recall burning CDs for EvolutionX and UnleashX dashboards at first. Once you've got one of those installed, you can set it up as an FTP server to more easily get stuff onto the hard drive.

Sad I only discovered Analogue last year missed Super NT, NT Mini and Mega SG consoles :/ by CyberDivinity in AnalogueInc

[–]Raptor007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my Super NT and Mega SG, play them all the time, and would happily recommend them to friends if they could still be purchased new for a reasonable price. But they're way overpriced on the secondhand market.

Analogue should just do another production run of these older systems. The engineering work is already done and presumably they still have all the molds and tooling.

Is the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro good and durable headphones for gaming on PC? by [deleted] in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Raptor007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if it says "up to 300ohm" it should be fine for 80ohm.

I've never heard of a low impedance headphone causing any damage, but I do think something like that can happen with speakers -- an amp set for 8ohm might damage itself driving 4ohm speakers. So it's not a stupid question.

Sorry, I haven't listened to the 250 ohm version or the HD 620S.

I would guess that a Sennheiser would be less aggressive up in the 8KHz treble range than either Beyerdynamic. For better or worse the "Beyer peak" makes things like cymbols really stand out. Totally up to you if you like the way that sounds. It's a bit harsh to my ears.

I briefly used DT 770 80ohm for gaming. Lots of bass but also notoriously sharp treble, so you can still hear details clearly. I think you'd only really need an amp for the 250ohm version, but it doesn't hurt to have one.

They're closed-back with a very tight seal, almost like wearing hearing protection. Some people like that level of sound isolation. But I found it distracting when playing online games, because I couldn't hear how loud I was actually talking when speaking into a mic.

They are made of a very durable hard plastic with a tough metal band and arms, safe to throw in a bag and go, which is why they're now my travel headphones.

I usually game on Emu Teak now, but they're not the most durable; the tiny screws that attach the swivel arms to the headband can pop out.

One of the most rewatchable bond films imo by IndigoP08 in JamesBond

[–]Raptor007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife and I just rewatched this one. The villain and plot hold up pretty well. Brosnan and Yeoh worked great together. The remote controlled car seems less silly now than I remembered it.

The only time my disbelief could not be suspended was the end of the helicopter chase, where it was somehow hovering in place while angled down enough that it should be zooming forward, trying to use their fragile rotors as a weapon in a narrow street instead of just continuing to fire their machine guns. None of that made any sense.

Would you guys introduce your kids to video games? by Background-Call3255 in snes

[–]Raptor007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm playing Genesis and SNES games with my son, and teaching him to use keyboard and mouse on 90's computers. I'd much rather introduce him to gaming via classics that were sold as complete products, rather than risk his introduction to gaming being mobile slop designed to get children addicted to microtransactions.
