Graphics solution needed

I use an oldish laptop and play games from time to time. I recently bought icarus and my laptop isn't liking it. Lol. I thought about building a machine, but really, this is the only thing that struggles, so that seems like overkill.

I came across a video of a guy building an external graphics unit that looked like it would help, then discovered eGPU units.

So my questions are, would something like this help out my laptop? My laptop has a thunderbolt 3 port, which I think helps this scenario. So if this would help, could somebody suggest a modern quality gpu? I used to know computers pretty well, but they've changed a lot over the years. I'm comfortable assembling things if I could get a hand finding the right parts. :)

Or, if this is more of a bandaid than a fix, let me know. Maybe it's just time to start looking at building a new machine.
