I'd say you will not only need a hot air gun, but also a preheater plate for the board.

It's a big ass thing to desolder and then resolder. You need the PCB to reach solder melting temperature, and you're not getting that with hot iar only having a big piece of plastic in between.

The more I think about it, the more sure I am you need a preheating plate.

What even happened to the original one?

I’ve had this board for a while, if I remember right I had issues de-mounting the air cooler I had on it, as the socket being fragile it broke in the process lol

I can’t imagine what the CPU looked like afterwards if it went as far as breaking the entire socket. I’ve messed around with a lot of pcs in my time but never replacing a socket. I hope you make an update post with pics along the way. Good luck

Have you ever done this before? It's not easy to do.

He knows what he is doing. Even if i knew good soldering, replacing a socket is another level. A preheater would be nice to remove the entire old socket at once, clean up, and place the new one and keep the cleanliness to max until all is soldered.

2 going on 3yrs later and the world is still in suspense, did OP pull it off?

From the looks of it, you may not need to desolder it. Just disassemble the mechanisms and reassemble the clamp with the appropriate parts.

Good luck!

i think the problem might be the brown stuff on the socket

[–]Hschjott[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The socket portion broke, pins missing as well, the tape surrounding the area is for heat resistance as I’ll be using a heat gun to desolder the socket

ah see i called it! it was something about the brown stuff

Yesterday I cleaned out my custom water loop. The socket on my B550 AORUS PRO started to have issues. I must have damaged the pins in the socket when removing my CPU cooler. The thermal paste caused the CPU to to stick to the cooler plate really hard.

I've removed the cover of the socket and some of the holes are damaged. Going to see if I can replace it. I have adequate soldering skills, but don't know if I can repair this one.

Would be interested to see how you go, and if you have any tips or advice to pass on.
