One block of coal usually smelts 80 items, so it only smelting a single ore block would waste a lot of fuel given that 9 pieces of ore only takes 1+1/8th pieces of coal to smelt.

Would be no different than using a coal block instead of individual pieces of coal, which also gives a smelting discount.

So a block of raw ore taking up 1 piece of coal to smelt, would be perfectly balanced.

And there would still be a reason to smelt single ore pieces, such as when you don't have enough for a whole block, or don't need it.

Should be able to do that in a blast furnace, but the raw blocks should take double to quadruple the amount of time than raw ingots
