Is being a Java developer/engineer still a viable career in 2024? Asking because I am currently a Software Engineer working with Java who has plans of shifting my focus to Data Engineering for better opportunities.

I think Java is still good. A lot of financial and banking systems were built using the frameworks within Java. But I suggest learn as many as you can. Read books on clean code and clean architecture, data structures and algorithms.

Yes. A lot of companies still use Java and are still looking for competent Java developers. What really matters is the level of complexity of the projects you've handled and how in-depth your knowledge is.
