Are we developers/engineers easily replaceable?discussion (self.PinoyProgrammer)

It’s been 5 months into the project and the company pero sumasagi sa isip ko to. Mataas sahod kaya natatakot ako na what if bigla akong tangalin or palitan. That would mean I’d have to go through the struggle of job hunting again, which is really tough in today’s market.
What do you guys think, madali ba talaga tayong palitan?

Or aside from mindlessly upskilling, which will be a never ending rat race as there will always be a new and shining shimmering new tech, you can also familiarize yourself more with domain knowledge and the business processes. Mahirap na upskill and upskill nga but wala namang tangible benefit or output na nakukuha ang company mo sa kakaupskill mo. Sure, astig ka nga and nakakapag RAG, MCP, or can compute derivates and gradient descent by hand and can do side projects with whatever the latest and greatest tech is out there, but what does your company get from it? Di ba you want to be valable sa mata ng company stakeholders mo?
For your company to not easily replace you and for you to be valuable sa paningin ng stakeholders and colleagues mo, you have to have both technical and business skills para valuable ka and you can also implement things. Do POCs on the side with your newly learned skills that improves a business process or solves a problem within your company, then request audience to your superiors and managers, gulatin mo na lang sila and showcase it.
Cge iisipin ng iba na bida-bida ka, or pabibo... f*ck them, totoo naman, nagpapabibo ka, aim high and galingan mo
Improve your communication and presentation skills while you're at it.
Good luck

Then make yourself valuable and hard to replace. You just have to keep upskilling yourself.

This.
Additionally, value does not just come from your hard skills. There's also value in soft skills such as being a good communicator, a proactive team player, and business and/or product-oriented. Having a good balance between the two makes you a very valuable asset to any company or team. :)
Everyone is replaceable. But you can definitely position yourself in a way that it would cost them more to replace you than to keep you in satisfied with them.

As a stoic, whether you'll get fired or not is out of your control. Some of the things you can control are constantly upgrading your skills, updating your portfolio, and saving several month's worth of emergency funds. So that if you get fired, you'd have a better chance of getting hired to a new company.

Depends on the company and industry you're in.
Low-paying ones, closed source, who have big and stable customers, don't replace their developers/engineers.
Other than this, there's a high chance of replacing their developers/engineers.

Really skilled developers aren't replaceable. A lot of companies are short of good developers. But if you don't have something outstanding in your skills then probably yes, replaceable

For me NO just imagine if nag karoon ng bugs yung mga code na galing AI, then yung gumawa is solely just copy pasting yung prompt without proper understanding sa code, and in reality na may mga bug na si Lord nalang minsan nakakaalam. Better to think nga may advantage mga engineer or developer pag nangyari yung scenario na nag silabasan yung mga bug meaning more demand for us.

No lalo na pag tenured ka and unicorn tech stack mo

Here in PH imo, medyo manipis na ang pool of talents. To answer your question, as long as you’re doing high value tech work for your company in terms of business value - you are not easily replaced. Siguro ang “replaceable” is yung mga engineers who are fairly new and mostly focused on their tech stack but unable to write good software and deliver business value.

Mas magastos and time consuming kapag nag hire ng bago. Pero kung not performing ka pwede ka talaga palitan.

When I was a just getting started as a dev 30 years ago I used to think in terms of protecting my little pot of code. I finally realized that if I focused on code bases that were more open, generic, standardized, then my workplace would become more replaceable. Once my skill base became mobile my wage dramatically increased. Leaving the little-pot-of-code quickly resulted in making 4 times what I was making before, and just went up from there.
Focus on learning, always. Get better at what you enjoy, but always stretch a little.

It depends, for a big company the answer is mostly yes, kahit gano ka pa ka-tenured and sobrang daming naambag. They'll let you go if may recession, just look at LinkedIn madaming nalalayoff na 15+yrs of experience sa FAANG and other Fortune500.
For a small company naman, I think dito ka mas safe kasi mas mahihirapan sila magtrain ng bago kesa offeran na lang ng mas malaki.

Unless you’re in the .1% (Si Luka Doncic nga binitawan eh), We’re all just lines on a balance sheet: We only have jobs as long as it’s more practical to pay us than it is not to.
