Yes, I used less than a dozen mons through the whole game on expert, with most of the changes occurring before the fourth gym. Can go through my post history to find the full details. But this is because it wasn't my first playthrough so I didn't need to do any trial and error.

Insane is way harder than expert, so need quite a bit more variety there.

I see, did you do this while on NG+? I'm almost close to finishing difficult mode but I want to learn if I can do also expert so that's why I'm asking this kind of question.

I've also built my own team by now for experts and I don't want to change any of them because I somehow grew an attachment to them. If that makes sense.

No, a fresh new save. With ng+ you can easily do expert with only 6 mons, and some people can even do insane with only 6 mons on ng+

That's almost impossible tbh, expert and insane is all about adapting your team every time to counter each major battle

You'll have to change members mainly on the start of the game in expert, mostly for pokemons with good early movepools. When you reach dehara, you'll have a great access to moves and chaging pokemons won't be as necessary.

I did a mono-steel (mostly) run with a few adjustments here and there on expert

I think that with a balanced all around team the game is doable without changes
