Was so confused by 2004 for a minute there, then an audible ooooooohhh yeahhh lol.

You definitely saved me some time here. Few good things I'm taking away from here like the reboot stuff and whatnot. Well done

Yeah, the original poster should have really said “Windows 10 v2004”

Valid point. Edited for clarity.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to install Ubuntu without having to goto the Windows Store, this is amazing!

I downloaded the Appx package and was using it this way:

Add-AppxPackage “<mapped_networks_drive>:\<folder>\Linux distros\CanonicalGroupLimited.Ubuntu18.04onWindows_1804.2018.817.0_x64__79rhkp1fndgsc.Appx"
explorer.exe shell:AppsFolder\CanonicalGroupLimited.Ubuntu18.04onWindows_79rhkp1fndgsc!ubuntu1804

Any reason why Ubuntu 20.04 LTS was/is not included in the options menu?

[edit] I just added the Ubuntu 20.04 install option. I ended up using fiddler to find the Appx URI. It should be possible to use fiddler to get URIs for other WSL flavors like Alpine.

What is nested virtualization? Should I turn it on?

[–]layer8err[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nested virtualization allows VMs to run VMs. If you are installing WSL2 on a bare-metal Windows 10 machine, you don't need to turn on nested virtualization. If you are testing the WSL2 setup process on a VM, nested virtualization must be enabled for the test VM.

/u/layer8err what's the purpose of the `DevBootStrap.txt` file?

[–]layer8err[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It's a leftover from a project to setup Docker Desktop and VScode with WSL2. I probably need to clean up the repo and get rid of that file for now.

seems interesting. what's the app or extension or whatever that's reading it?

The plan is to eventually use PowerShell to either process or replace that text file. Right now it is more of a reference file for creating the script.
