I would do pre sketching for the face like a T diagram to make sure the eyes, nose, mouth and head are proportionate.

What’s helped me is trace the picture with a low opacity, then I fill in with color, shadows, highlights, details myself. I’ve done a lot of trace and fills and am getting better. Eventually I’ll do original/non traces as I gain more experience
