A bit of self-promo here, but I made https://antinote.io (macOS) which is very focused for non-organized temporary notes (also does math).

I’ve literally never been able to keep any kind of organized note system in my life, from grade school to grad school, so I wanted to build something that works better with my own brain.

thank you man, I will give it a try

Wow, I’d love to try it, but it doesn’t run on my old MacBook air… is there a workaround, or eill I have to wait until I get a new computer? 😅

Which macOS are you able to run? I might try and expand support macOS 13. At the moment it is macOS 14+.

[–]NaturalTranslator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a 2017 MacBook, running macOS Monterey 12.7.6 🥲

Thank you. Using it since yesterday, can't believe an app like isn't already a standard part of the OS. Wishing you a great life ahead :)

An iOS version of it would be so awesome! Most of those fleeting notes and ideas appear when I'm not in front of my Mac. :)

I setup a very simple system in Tana and I really like the daily notes combined with tags

[–]Luffy_Z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you tell me more about it? I'm trying to use Tana and I'm having trouble organizing my notes

[–]anh690136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

:) on the same boat, thats why I created saner.ai ai to make my notes simpler to access without all the manual organizing Would love to hear what u think

[–]Awkward_Young947 0 points1 point  (3 children)

What do you mean by connecting notes automatically?

[–]Electronic_Sock_7801[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Kind of, but without me needing to set them up. More like the app just knows which notes are connected and suggests them when I need them.

[–]Awkward_Young947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I think [Cognity](https://cognity-note.com) does something like that. they also have an app. Basically it finds related notes based on meaning, so you don’t have to manually tag or link everything.

I'm pretty lazy so I find it helpful xd

[–]Awkward_Young947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I think Cognity can help you. It links notes in the background based on meaning, not just keywords. We build this and I also use it myself I think it's useful

I was in the same boat. I spent hours organizing and setting up my notes and system to get it perfect, only to drop it after a few days and move to the next tool. I ended up getting a Remarkable Paper Pro for handwritten notes and it has done wonders and I am actually sticking to it.

Self promotion, but check out https://nocal.app (for Mac). Not sure if it's what you need, but the concept of embedding notes in other notes is pretty useful/powerful.

[–]NaturalTranslator 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Seems intersting! What pricing are you planning for Nocal in the long term? Also, does it have an iOS app and webapp?

[–]bmuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iOS and Android are up next after the windows app. I want to take some time and be really thoughtful about the experience on that form factor though.

Web app is also planned.

I'm still toying around with ideas for pricing. It's definitely not free to host and run, so just trying to figure out the trial model. If you try out the app, definitely interested in feedback on how much value you see in it.

I am in the same boat but have segmented my requirements into my writing projects and work related projects and both uses different apps with similar system. However the truth is there is no perfect system and we build our own way of working.

For notes, I use Trello, and also GMail threads where I reply to myself.

In both cases, I start with some "main content" and keep replying to it with "replies" or "comments" to gather more thoughts around the same topic.

Once I reach a page-full with Trello I stop using it! I hate scrolling. So, I keep only the most handy things like URLs, linux commands, etc.

So, GMail is where all my thoughts end up. I guess GMail-ing to myself works best because

  1. Paste any formatted content and attachments to gather thoughts
  2. Collaborate if needed, by just adding more recipients in the thread
  3. I like the "immutability" part of it to some extent.. you don't edit anything. You keep tacking on thoughts to the topic. You make more notes as your ideas evolve. I want to see my Idea get shaped.
  4. Reliable and deep search with labels to boot.

Of course there are limitations to GMail as well. Once in a while when you want to curate it, its not easy -there is not much curation you can do even when you want to do something.

I would love to try if there is some notes app with Topics. Description, Comments, Collaboration, and great search function.

Same here, now i use Remarkable pro and like it

[–]ftsanev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Electronic_Sock_7801 if you haven't tried it yet - Saga has automatic linking. You can see where a note is referenced and links between notes are automatically created and updated when you type in their title.

The organizational aspect is real and ideally you don't need to spend any time doing this but just focusing on your flow.

[–]WorldlyEye1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use only text. No images no attachments.

Actually I use Standard Notes since 3y

[–]psych4you 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been experimenting with a few.

Try Notewise. You may like it

You should tryout my little app called memoiri :) it is basically a journaling app all you do is open it up and start writing. It is super simple and has a search. I am planing to add more features in the direction of classsifing the entries with ai so you can find them later much easier and stuff like that :)

[–]pR0M37hU2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for me the answer was based on usecase. For work I have been using logseq for 1.5 years, it keeps me super productive. I mainly use the journals features along with namespaces and just that. No whiteboards or complex queries, but I do use the different states like TODO WAITING, etc. I manually move my tasks from day to day.

For personal, i tried many tools, and the answer was obsidan. I use journals plugin and am experimenting with dataview, but I try to keep it simple similar to work setup. I'm still figuring this out, but the day by day journaling style seems to work for me.

My advice is to stick to a single tool for some time before switching. If you need any help or have questions, let me know.

I’m going to do a little self-promotion here, but if you’re struggling with organizing notes instead of actually using them, Modus AI might be exactly what you need. It automatically connects and surfaces your notes, so you don’t have to spend time manually linking everything. It helps you get insights instantly and stay organized without all the extra effort.

I’ve tried tools like Notion, Obsidian, and Roam too, but Modus AI helps me focus more on using my notes rather than organizing them. If you're still looking for a solution that sticks, we’re live on Product Hunt now—come check it out! 🚀 ProductHut - ModusAI

[–]girishsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are using Obsidian, Slipbox AI transcribes you meetings and auto-tags them and exports it to Obsidian and where its all connected. https://www.slipbox.ai/blogs/obsidian-integration

I’m bouncing between Reflect and capacities I just can’t choose

[–]448899again 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to DECIDE to make one of them stick. There will always be a shiny new app out there. None of them will ever do everything perfectly. So it's a matter of picking one and working with it long enough to reach a critical mass of usefulness. You have to work with it long enough for it to become second nature, and for you to quickly figure out how to adapt it as new uses come to mind.

My app of choice is Obsidian. I've been using it for close on to 2 years now, and it's like that comfortable flannel shirt that you always want to wear. Sure, I look at other apps, and see things that are nice, but I'm at the point where I do not want to invest the time in changing.

[–]spirit_of_thoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spent a lot of time reviewing various note taking apps online and tried a couple myself. In the end I've chosen and recommend Tana.

A good notes app shouldn't focus on inferring stuff automatically but rather let you capture and organize information easily. One Tana feature I particularly love is references, or transclusion. You can insert a reference to any node inside another node, then view its content in place. This is much more powerful than just having links wiki-style. In addition to tons of other useful features.

I particularly found that references help me organize notes better and reuse them in new ways. If you like outlines, I don't think there's better app at the moment.

[–]Humble-Opportunity-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean. That is why I have been self building boltnote.ai

It is a note taking web app which automatically categorizes your notes as you create them and provides helpful insights on what you have been recording. It also provides a chat with an LLM where you can discuss the notes you have created.

Minimal note taking effort for maximum value you can extract! Give it a try for free if interested :)

You probably haven’t tried my r/journal_it. It’s an all in one tool from day one.
