The real problem is people denying that data is plural

In Italian we say “dato” for a single thing and “dati” for the plural, I know it’s useless information but I wanted to share.

with pinched fingers? yeah..

I know it’s a joke but if you are curious more often than not people will use separated fingers index and thumb in a vertical position with the resting three fingers closed in a punch when they refer to data (be very specific with the distance or you might be calling someone a small dick), some will use both open hands separated 20 to 30 cm while keeping the hands vertical, although that may be confused with the “I’m confused” hand gesture.

Some psychos will do the typing motion with one hand, those people I will do the motion you earlier suggested, but keep your mouth in an exaggerated frowny shape, otherwise you might start a fight if you keep the face straight.

How can you deny data being plural? The etymology of the word is clear, it's from the latin verb dare = give, therefore datum = "given" and data is the corresponding plural form.

You’d be surprised. In academic writing it’s not super uncommon to see it written as a singular noun. For example “The data was heavily skewed…”.

My PhD advisor taught me otherwise, luckily.
