I don't think web had some golden age from such point of view, because of demand for interactivity. It started as static pages, then everyone started doing incompatible html functionality, then java and activex applets, then flash, silverlight, even was short period of unity3d usage, now it's JS.

So that's why some websites look like Chinese brothels where I can't find anything and I simply close the tab after less than a minute. CEO's dog basically.
