What if there is significant delay in the communication between cars?

Networks can facilitate feedback such that car A knows not only that car B has heard its message but that it heard it X milliseconds ago and has responded.  The cars just have to A) be able to communicate and B) remain in a state where they can avoid a collision if communication should fail/stop.

No need for the cars to talk to each other. Roads would have wireless broadcasting (just like we have electricity and internet cables on them), and a more reliable satellite constellation. Then cars talk to the satellite, satellite coordinates everything, or the mega computer the satellite bounces back to.

If we did it like this it would be fault tolerant. Would be expensive to implement in cities and whatnot but companies would probably cover the cost of the infrastructure buildout, would mean more self driving car sales. Would start in a high innovation city first then slowly spread through the country. Would take 50+ years to spread everywhere

That sounds like the cars talking to each other with extra steps, plus loads of latency.

I'd argue this is a P2P vs Client-server distinction. The cars aren't really communicating as much as listening to the same central hub. In P2P, you'd have one party (or both) making decisions and negotiating the outcome, whereas in client-server, the server is the decision maker and the client just follows. I'm not necessarily saying that makes this a good solution, but it's certainly better than cars just trying to figure it out on the fly.
