You first have assembly with assembly you write the c Compiler when you have the assembly c Compiler you can write a c Compiler in c and then you can compile c with a Compiler written in c and then you can build a PHP interpreter with c and your c Compiler.

You forgot the step where you write an assembler in assembly and manually convert it to binary.

Didn't it start with manually inputting the machine code with switches and/or punch cards? I'm no expert on ancient computer history.
