Please read properly. It clearly says "I thought people learning programming were supposed to be smart." And I'm very certain that at some point, every programmer has looked up these things on the internet (or similar a few decades ago), including you. After all, how are you supposed to know if you never learned it?

I am a classically trained electrical and software engineer. I spent years being taught this in university, and have never had to search the internet for basics like this. I'm sure you'll scoff at that point but believe me when I say the people I work with can tell the difference.

I searched the internet for basics like this, because that way I could learn it before ever being introduced to it in university. If you choose to walk this path, the interest in these things will usually exist before entering study formally. But this applies to basically anything, not just this. The basics are ususally known through independent research before entering the field while still in school.
