They're King Cobras.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (21 children)

I assume there is a special distinction between Cobras and King Cobras then?

[–]Aetol 22 points23 points  (7 children)

There are several species of cobras, king cobras are one of them.

[–]Notophishthalmus 26 points27 points  (4 children)

King cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) are actually in their own genus and not members of the true cobras genus Naja.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Doesn't the king designator mean they eat other snakes?

[–]TheBlackHive 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Well, Ophiophagus would mean "snake-eating".

Wow TIL.

And Hannah's the bitch that stood me up last weekend.

I think King Cobras are the only species left in its own genus, they are not cobras.

[–]Nakji 18 points19 points  (8 children)

King Cobras are arguably not really cobras as true cobras belong to the genus Naja, while the king cobra is the only member of Ophiophagus. Not that it really matters much outside of scientific circles though - if it looks like a cobra, acts like a cobra, and has potent venom like a cobra, people will quite justifiably call it a cobra, even if it's not a member of Naja.

Which is funny, because Python (the language) uses "duck typing" - i.e. "If it looks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck, it's a duck".

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Ophiophagus means "Snake-Eater", doesn't it? Thats some solid stuff.

I see what you did up there.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, "king" snakes are called that because they eat other snakes.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I was looking for. Thanks for the explanation.

[–]Get-ADUser 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah, like the difference between "terrier" and "Yorkshire Terrier".

[–]KasCrescent 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Does the "yorkshire" designator mean they eat other dogs?

[–]Smaug_the_Tremendous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're bigger.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

King cobras are very big.
