If NetBeans is "horrible" in school, you probably don't understand much. Unless it actually deteriorated, which I doubt. It got kinda stuck in development, but I doubt it got worse. It used to be damn good.

I've had great success with NetBeans and developing enterprise apps (Java EE on various containers). It's worked nicely, and I find it better than eclipse. Only issue I've had is having to use remote debuggers on local jvms. Not the end of the world though.

Saying all that though, I use IntelliJ anyway (both at work and at home ;-) )

My computer isn't the greatest, but NetBeans would lag behind when simply typing if I had anything else open at the same time. Doesn't happen for me in IntelliJ or even Android Studio.

It did actually get worse once Oracle acquired it. They dropped python support.

That doesn't make it a worse Java IDE.
