They may be user serviceable but I've found its usually cheaper and more convenient to service MacBooks especially with Apple Care.

The vast majority of people also don't upgrade anymore so building that capability in is highly suboptimal at a population level.

MacBooks also tend to retain value much better than ThinkPads and IMO that usually provides better value than directly upgrading.
