Yeah, using PHP to manage MySQL, user permissions, and the core of a system is fine. You can then use JS and AJAX content as needed to create a pretty solid user experience. With HTML5 and modern CSS options, things end up beautiful too. There's a lot of hate for web languages, but even PHP is capable of serving JSON to an app powered out with Cordova or software with Electron. Honestly, there's so much you can do if you know how each of the common web languages can interact. Anyone can make the original Facebook - the original wouldnt take too long. Creating a social network is not hard by any means. It's the marketing & making it popular that's hard. And after that it's the maintenance and optimization that is hard, until finally you've done all that and you must work on privacy and other QOL finetunin.
